MfG - Sincerely, is a song by the German hip-hop group Die Fantastischen Vier . The song is the first single from their fifth studio album 4:99 and was released on March 21, 1999.
content
shape
MfG - Yours sincerely, begins with a sentence from the film James Bond 007 - The Spy Who Loved Me : “Now that the curtain of the night rises from the stage, the game can begin, which tells us about the drama of a culture. "
The individual lines of the stanzas usually consist of three acronyms strung together , usually three letters, which, with the exception of the very first line, are related to one another, see for example the second line " FRG , GDR and USA ", in which all the abbreviations listed denote states . These contexts of meaning are partly of an indirect nature, for example " RAF , LSD and FKK " are related to the fact that LSD consumption led many young people in the 1950s and 1960s (including many hippies and some 68s ) to question socially established beliefs, which not only promoted nudist culture, but also initiated the West German student movement of the 1960s , from which the RAF developed in turn.
However, many exceptions (often of a humorous nature) are made to the usual form; so the third abbreviation is often replaced by terms or comments that consist of three or four syllables such as “ojemine”, “you can do me”, Eschede or Hubert Kah .
meaning
With this song, the band criticizes the development of the German language with its numerous abbreviations and acronyms , the real meaning of which is often no longer remembered, and, based on this, the processes of alienation in our society today.
The refrain contains the following interrelated sentences:
"MfG - with best regards
The world is at our feet, because we stand on it
We walk on it for a life full of noise and smoke
Before we fall, we'd rather fall on"
“Sound and smoke” is part of a common phrase (something is “only sound and smoke”) and originally comes from Goethe's “ Faust. A tragedy. ", In which it says" Name is sound and smoke ". With the extreme example of abbreviations, the volume not only shows the general difficulty of grasping reality with the (naturally) simplistic language, but also criticizes the general emptiness of meaning in neoliberal modernity.
production
The song was produced by the two band members And.Ypsilon and Hausmarke . All four group members acted as authors.
Music video
German director Zoran Bihać directed the music video that was shot for MfG - Sincerely .
At the beginning the Fantastischen Vier take a selfie in a jeep, while a bus drives towards them in the background. You drive to a photo shop and print out the pictures you have taken. Appropriate photos are shown for the abbreviations rapped in the first verse. During the chorus, the group performs a choreography in the store. Then they drive through the city again and make an emergency stop in front of a zebra crossing, which causes the printed images to fall onto the street and the bus behind them has an accident. A group of young cleaning women get out of the bus, they begin to sweep the street and then move rhythmically to the music as cheerleaders . Meanwhile, the Fantastischen Vier stand on the roof of the bus and then jump down to dance along.
The video won a Comet in the Video National category in 1999 .
