4:99 is the fifth regular studio album by Fantastischen Vier . It was released on April 26, 1999 at Sony Music Entertainment , followed in 2002 by an LP version on the band's record label Four Music . In 2009, on the occasion of the band's 20th stage anniversary, a digitally revised version of the album was released, which contains some remixes as bonus tracks.

Style and reception

On “4:99”, as on the previous albums, Die Fantastischen Vier worked with sampling . The refrain of The City That Does n't Exist, for which a song quotation from Hildegard Knefs Im 80th Floor was used, became particularly well known . This track was supposed to be the first single, until the band decided on MfG - with kind regards . In Hammer a section of is U Can not Touch This by MC Hammer to hear. FunkYms20 is an instrumental piece by And.Ypsilon in the style of his solo works. Million Legions is the continuation of the piece Krieger from the album Lauschgift . Buenos Dias Messiah is a way of settling the four with the press and the media in general. In the accompanying video clip, the four disguised themselves as a kind of underground organization and appeared unannounced at various events such as the Echo or in television series such as Peep and caused unrest. The band wanted to make the brutality of the television program clear. In the song and video clip for Michi Beck in Hell , Michael DJ Beck, aka Hausmarke, plays his own death. He goes broke, loses all his money and ends up in hell. The video for Le Smou was shot in a real psychiatric hospital .

Compared to the previous album “Lauschgift”, which was released four years earlier, “4:99” is quieter, and the lyrics have also become more thoughtful. The reviews were positive: Laut.de found words of praise and Allmusic awarded the AMG Album Pick .

successes

The album was the only album by the Fantastischen Vier in Germany, Austria and Switzerland to make it to number 1, the first single MfG - Mit freundlichen Grüßen made it to number 2 on the charts.
