Profile in the BoxRec database

Albert Dariusz Sosnowski alias " The Dragon " (born March 7,  1979 in Warsaw ) is a Polish professional boxer and former EBU European heavyweight champion.

Career as a boxer

Sosnowski started out kickboxing and signed a contract as a professional boxer at the age of 18, without having previously been an amateur boxer. He played his first fight on July 22, 1998 in Denmark against the Czech Jan Drobena. He won the first round by knockout. He also won the next 18 fights, including eleven more by knockout. In July 2001, he competed against the Canadian Arthur Cook for the WBC junior heavyweight title, but lost on points in front in the ninth round by knockout

On November 4, 2006 he won on points against Lawrence Tausa from Australia the fight for the insignificant world heavyweight title according to the version of the WBF . He successfully defended the title in September 2007 against the Argentine Manuel Alberto Pucheta by knockout in the second round. He had previously won on June 8, 2007 by TKO against the Frenchman Steve Herelius ; however, this was not a fight for the WBF title.

The second loss of his career Sosnowski experienced on August 6, 2008 in New York against the American Zuri Lawrence. In November of the same year, however, he won in London against the favorite British and Tyson conqueror Danny Williams by TKO in the eighth round. In April 2009 he fought in Düsseldorf against the Italian Francesco Pianeta, who trained at the Sauerland boxing stable, for the EBU title of EU heavyweight champion. The duel ended in a draw after twelve rounds, so that Pianeta retained his title as defending champion. When Sosnowski boxed for the EBU European heavyweight title in December 2009, he went out of the ring as the winner against Paolo Vidoz after twelve rounds.

A defense of the EBU belt against Audley Harrison , gold medalist at the 2000 Olympic Games, was planned for April 2010, but Sosnowski canceled it and instead gave up the title because he had the chance to win against Vitali Klitschko on May 29, 2010 for his WBC - World title to climb into the ring. The duel took place in the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen . Klitschko's decision for Sosnowski as an opponent caused a lot of surprise for many people; Critics, such as the former light heavyweight world champion Dariusz Michalczewski , regarded such a fight as too early for Sosnowski or gave him no chance against Klitschko. For the fight against Klitschko Sosnowski was trained by Fiodor Lapin. Sosnowski finally lost to the Ukrainian by knockout in the tenth round.

Another attempt to secure the EBU title in May 2010 failed due to a knockout loss to Alexander Dimitrenko .
