Francesco Pianeta, 2019

Francesco Pianeta (born October 8, 1984 in Corigliano Calabro , Italy ) is a former German - Italian boxer , who competed for the German boxing stable Petko's LMS Promotion, and is today's boxing trainer.

Career

Pianeta was born in Corigliano Calabro ( Province of Cosenza ) in 1984 . His family emigrated to Gelsenkirchen when Pianeta was six years old; there his father worked in a meat shop.

At first Pianeta practiced Muay Thai as a hobby . During his amateur career he boxed at BC Alder 49 e. V.

On July 2, 2005, he made his professional debut in boxing. He defeated his opponent in the tenth fight Paulo Ferrara (moderate record 23-10-1) only just on points. Four fights later, which he won all, he faced Paulo Ferrara again and won again with a points win.

He won the WBC Youth World Heavyweight Title against Donald Wiggins and defended it against the undefeated Michael Marrone (18-0) by TKO.

On August 30, 2008 Pianeta won a so-called EU championship (not to be confused with the real European championship of the EBU ) against Scott Gammer (18-2-1) in the eighth round by giving up the opponent. On December 21, 2008, the heavyweight trained by Ulli Wegner defended his title unanimously on points (117: 111, 116: 112 and 115: 113) against the undefeated French challenger Johann Duhaupas (17-0). For the first time in his career as a professional boxer, he stood in the ring over the entire distance of twelve laps.

On April 4, 2009, EU heavyweight champion Francesco Pianeta defended his title against ex-World Cup challenger Albert Sosnowski (45 fights / 42 wins) from Poland, his first opponent in the at least extended world class. The judges gave him a tie with 113: 115, 116: 114 and 114: 114. Since Pianeta was the defending champion, he was allowed to keep his belt.

Illness and new boxing stable

At the end of 2009, Pianeta was diagnosed with cancer that temporarily forced him to give up boxing. A year later he made his comeback.

In September 2011 he announced his move to Ulf Steinforth's SES boxing stable and left Sauerland Events. His new coach has been Dirk Dzemski since the move . Just a month later, Pianeta made his debut against Robert Hawkins at an SES event in Brandenburg an der Havel .

On May 4, 2013, Pianeta challenged world champion Wladimir Klitschko in the Mannheim SAP Arena . In this world championship title fight, Pianeta was defeated in the sixth round by knockout. Wladimir Klitschko then praised him as the opponent "who has struck with the strongest blows I have ever experienced" and predicted: "One day Francesco will be world champion".

On May 30, 2014 Francesco Pianeta won the WBO European heavyweight title by knockout in the first round against the French Michael Vieira. On December 6th of the same year he defended this title against the Croatian Ivica Bacurin over 12 rounds by unanimous decision. On July 11, 2015 Pianeta had the chance to become heavyweight world champion: He lost to 36-year-old Uzbek Ruslan Chagayev by knockout in the first round in the fight for the regular WBA title ( WBA superchampion at the time was Wladimir Klitschko ) .

After the fight against Chagaev, Pianeta switched to Petko's LMS Promotion, Alexander Petkovic's boxing stable in Dachau. He lost his most important fight since then in August 2018 to Tyson Fury . On February 6, 2019, Francesco Pianeta announced the end of his career.

On August 10, 2020, Pianeta, who has meanwhile acquired the trainer's license, announced his intention to set up an old school boxing gym in Lippstadt .
