Corigliano Calabro is a southern Italian fraction in the province of Cosenza in the Calabria region . Since March 31, 2018, it has been part of the municipality of Corigliano-Rossano , the largest in the province of Cosenza. The historic center of the city ("Corigliano Paese"), which dates back to the Middle Ages, is impressively situated on one of the foothills of the Sila Mountains . The municipality of Corigliano Calabro last had 40,426 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2016).
history
The name of the city Corigliano Calabro indicates Greek- Byzantine origins ("olive grove"). The old town of Corigliano Calabro has an impressive cityscape due to its elevated position, which culminates in the city palace from the time of the rule of the House of Aragon over southern Italy.
Not far from the district of Thurio was the ancient Greek city of Thurioi , which was built in 452 BC. The city of Magna Graecia , founded by sybarites in the 4th century BC , whose successor Roman foundations (Copia, Thurii) may not have been abandoned until the 9th century.
Corigliano Scalo
Today's main business center of the city was built in the 20th century along the train station and is called "Corigliano Scalo". A well-known district is the fishing village of Schiavonea ( Schiavonea Marina ), which is located directly on the sea and is a popular holiday destination in midsummer.
