biography

Early years

Giorgio Basile came to Mülheim an der Ruhr in 1961 as the son of the Calabrian guest worker Battista and his wife Schiavonea . His mother had an affair there. In 1965 the family returned to Corigliano. In Corigliano, the mother had an affair with the mafioso Antonio Giovagnone De Cicco . When Battista Basile heard this, he returned to West Germany. When Basile's mother became pregnant in 1968, she also traveled to Germany.

In the summer of 1976, Basile finished school without being able to read or write. He then began a support course at ThyssenKrupp and worked in a wire rope factory until he was 19. Shortly afterwards, when he injured his thumb in a wire rope machine, he made the decision to earn his living in another way.

In April 1980 he and other accomplices freed the mafia boss Arcangelo Maglio from the old prison in Wuppertal . In 1985 he was sentenced in Germany to nine years and six months imprisonment for participating in the murder of a discotheque owner, for attempted robbery and several break-ins. On September 9, 1991, after serving part of his prison term, he was deported to Italy. In Italy, Basile then became a drug dealer and contract killer of the Carelli clan of the Calabrian 'Ndrangheta ; he is said to have committed up to 30 murders , some of them in Corigliano - Schiavonea . During this time he commuted between Italy, Germany and the Netherlands.

Pentito

On May 2, 1998, Basile was arrested at the train station in Kempten in the Allgäu for unauthorized entry into Germany - Basile had a criminal record and had been expelled - and later became a key witness against the 'Ndrangheta. Based on his testimony at the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office , the German police authorities succeeded in uncovering mafia-like structures in Germany and arresting 50 Mafiosi.

Basile, who was sentenced to more than fifty years in prison in Italy for three murders, Mafia membership and drug trafficking, only served six months of his prison sentence based on his testimony. He now lives as a Pentito in the witness protection program of the Italian police and has to comply with a number of conditions (no contact with former friends and relatives, regular moves, hiding his own identity). In mid-July 2007, Basile testified for the first time before the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court against three Italians who had been charged with drug trafficking. The testimony took place via video transmission from Italy.

He has a daughter and a son, with whom he lives - with new names - in a secret place.
