Mechanical engineering

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The engineering computer science is a relatively new discipline of engineering . The use of EDP for product development or product creation is primarily researched, the use of EDP by and in machines is referred to as automation technology. The main topics of mechanical engineering informatics are:

  • Virtual product development ( CAD , CAE , DMU , VR )
  • Information management ( PDM , PLM )
  • Web-based cooperation (e-engineering)

Virtual product development

In the broadest sense, this refers to the technical development of a product within the virtual world of the computer. Today, products are described geometrically in CAD systems and assigned relevant technical properties (material properties: density, surface quality, elongation and yield strengths; mechanical and kinematic relationships; manufacturing information). New products can be checked and tested before "real" products are created.

Information management

Information management is understood to mean the filing, targeted distribution and search of technical information, today this includes CAD models in particular , but also any other documents.

Web-based cooperation

The globalization led first to a local separation of design and manufacturing facilities. Today this separation also exists within a development team. The challenge is to design the product creation process efficiently and across national borders, language barriers and time zones.
