history
Emergence
The University of Applied Sciences was established on August 1, 1971 through the merging of various predecessor institutions. It initially had 12 departments at two locations.
- The departments A ( architecture ), B ( civil engineering ) and G ( geodesy = surveying) go back to the Royal Prussian building trade school for civil engineering, founded in 1908 .
- The departments E ( electrical engineering ), F ( precision engineering ), M ( mechanical engineering ) and V ( process engineering ) go back to the Royal Prussian Mechanical Engineering School (since 1920: United State Mechanical Engineering Schools).
- The department P ( social pedagogy ) emerged from the municipal youth leader seminar founded in 1954.
- The S department ( social work ) emerged from the state-recognized women's school for people care founded in 1944.
- The department W ( economics ) emerged from the state higher business school founded in 1966.
- The faculties MND ( mathematics and natural sciences ) and
- SuK ( social and cultural sciences ) were only created with the establishment of the FH in 1971; At first they had no students of their own, but were purely service departments, especially for students in engineering departments.
In 1993, C (Care) was added as the 13th department. These 13 departments were spread over two locations, Nibelungenplatz and in the Northwest Center .
- Nibelungenplatz: Faculties A, B, G and SuK were located on the east side of Kleiststrasse in the old building of the building trade school or state building school, and faculties E, F, M, V and MND were located on the west side of the street in the old mechanical engineering school or engineering school. The two sides of Kleiststrasse were hardly less far apart than Nibelungenplatz and Nordweststadt.
- Nordweststadt: social education, social work, care and economy.
In 1995 the economics department and in 1998 the social departments moved from Nordweststadt to Nibelungenplatz.
With effect from July 1, 2001, the former departments were merged into four new departments: FB 1 (architecture, civil engineering, geomatics), FB 2 (computer science and engineering), FB 3 (economics and law), FB 4 (social work and health ).
The Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences is a member of the Hessen Universities of Applied Sciences .
Merger talks with the Wiesbaden University of Applied Sciences
In September 2005, the presidents of the universities of applied sciences in Frankfurt and Wiesbaden agreed on a strategic partnership between the two universities of applied sciences. This was justified by the changes in the federal German higher education system as a result of the Bologna Process and the resulting growing competition between technical colleges, universities and professional academies. On September 14, 2007, a steering group set up by the presidents presented a key issues paper for the merger of the two universities as the Rhein Main University of Applied Sciences . However, the merger was rejected by a large majority on December 12, 2007 by the Senate of the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, although the Senate of the Wiesbaden University of Applied Sciences had previously approved it.

Mission statement and development plan
The Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschule) is characterized by its urban location and its internationality. The more than 10,000 students come from around 100 nations. The teaching and the range of courses also show an international orientation, e.g. B. through double degrees with foreign partner universities, extensive exchange offers for students and lecturers and international weeks. With a view to its international orientation, the Senate and the University Council decided in December 2013 to rename the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences - Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences with effect from July 1, 2014 . You followed the example of other Hessian universities of applied sciences. FRA-UAS is also officially used as an abbreviation.
Structural development
Campus development 1
With the completion of “Campus Development 1” with a total expenditure of approx. 53 million euros, the renting of the BCN building (today City Gate) could be ended at that time. In addition, it enabled structural improvements such as the creation of a computer center, computer rooms and rooms for research projects as well as replacement rooms for the areas to be demolished from buildings 2, 3 and 4. The space program comprises approx an extension to the existing building 2 were realized. In the meantime - due to the growth of the university - larger areas in the BCN have been rented again.
Campus development 2
With "Campus Development 2", further spatial overload of the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences was reduced. In addition, a coherent campus area was created from the former site of the technical college and the former site of the "Philipp-Holzmann-Schule", including Kleiststrasse between Alleenring and Gleimstrasse. For this purpose, Kleiststrasse was redesigned for public transport and integrated into the campus. Corresponding resolutions were passed by the responsible bodies of the City of Frankfurt a. M. already adopted in 2002.

further education
FRA-UAS offers a number of predominantly part-time certificate programs that do not lead to a Bachelor's or Master's degree, but nevertheless enable further education at university level with a professional qualification. There are offers in the areas of leadership and communication, IT and technology, engineering, economics and management as well as health and social work.
Family-friendly university
On June 19, 2007, the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences was the first Hessian university to be awarded the “Family-Friendly University” certificate from the Federal Ministry of Economics. Right from the start, the focus of efforts to improve the compatibility of studies or work and family responsibilities was the development of a concept for needs-based and flexible childcare offers. The certification is based on a process of auditing with the participation of employees, professors and students.
The most important goals agreed in the family audit:
- Construction of a "research-oriented children's home" on campus (completed in 2016)
- Parent-child rooms with work opportunities for parents
- Information material and advice on studying and working with children at the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences
- Information material on caring for relatives
- Gathering of information and agreements on opportunities to study abroad with children
- Family-friendly organization of courses and exams
- Improving the reintegration of workers on leave
- Implementation of family justice in quality management
- Implementation of family justice in personnel development
- Training for managers
- Making working hours more flexible
