The Frankfurter Technologiezentrum Medien ( own spelling : Frankfurter Technologiezentrum [: Medien] , short: FTzM ) is an interdisciplinary scientific center of the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences , which researches the teaching-supporting and learning-promoting use of digital media in educational contexts. A special feature of the center is its interdisciplinary and development and design-oriented approach as well as the close connection between theory and practice (practical research). Due to the proximity of the regional projects to schools, the members of the center do not research media education and educational informatics in schools , but do research together with schools. At the center, students also work on application-related research projects and in media technology, didactic and pedagogical practical projects in the Frankfurt am Main educational area .
The center was founded in 2011; In addition to the non-profit school IT support project fraLine, it also includes other practical and research projects in the field of digital media in and for educational institutions. The members of the center are mainly teachers from the four faculties of the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences and the Goethe University ; they deal in an interdisciplinary manner with the research fields of educational informatics, media education research and teaching-learning research and come from the disciplines of educational sciences, (educational) psychology, computer science, engineering, sociology, social and media education. Most of the centre's staff are students who work in FTzM projects and conduct qualifying research. The team advises and supports educational institutions or decision-makers in the planning and implementation of media-pedagogical, didactic or technical projects as well as in questions of IT management or IT organization. Further fields of activity are software design and application development based on knowledge that is conducive to learning.
Projects in the field of implementation and support for schools and educational informatics
IBIdiM
After the initial focus of the fraLine project on the qualification of students and the partnership-based IT support of the Frankfurt schools, the development of comprehensive solutions and their scientific evaluation came to the fore in the later project phases, as did the project "Implementation of digital media in teaching and learning contexts "(IBIdiM). The experience gained in the fraLine project provided numerous questions and starting points for research projects in the field of IT organization and school IT management as well as media education research.
At the same time, the practical support of the schools enabled access to research with, at and for schools by opening up important personal contacts with the schools as a prerequisite for research activities. As such a "door opener" for research and development, the FTzM will continue to support schools in the future.
The aim of the project is to implement digital media in schools in order to use them in teaching and learning contexts to increase the quality of teaching, to meet the demand for adequate media education and instrumental media use in schools, to meet the increased interdisciplinary know-how and To meet the development needs of the school authority and the schools and to use the knowledge and developments gained to further adapt the IT infrastructure to the changing needs of schools (e.g. in the form of needs analyzes).
FraLine
Francine (proper spelling fraLine ) is a non-profit project of the Frankfurt Technology Center [: media] and the city education department of the city of Frankfurt am Main. It was founded in 2001. Under the motto "Students support teachers in Frankfurt schools in solving IT problems". The existing now for over 10 years project is a collaborative effort between the FTzM and the municipal education authority of the City of Frankfurt am Main, research in the students and in the development of school-IT and school IT management solutions as well as in the formation of computer science involved . On this basis, they also provide practical support to the 154 schools in Frankfurt with the support of the school IT and their meanwhile 19,000 PCs.
The employees support teachers in creating the technical requirements for the use of digital media in schools. Support from the fraLine team is free of charge for schools and includes a hotline and personal support on site at the schools. The fraLine employees are mainly students of computer science, engineering, educational sciences, social and media pedagogy or related courses. In 2008 the overall concept was named a "Landmark in the Land of Ideas" . In 2011, the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology awarded it second place in the “Paths to the Net” competition in the “Practical help and support: accompanying Internet newcomers” category.
FraDiTa
The project digital boards in educational contexts deals with the increasing use of digital media in schools and universities. The procurement and use of so-called "interactive whiteboards" for schools has increased significantly in recent years. With the introduction of the digital board in schools, the central teaching medium is also becoming digital and networked. On the one hand, digital board systems are suitable for promoting and facilitating the use of digital media in schools. On the other hand, the introduction of the new type of device also increases the demand for a scientifically based examination of technical and educational application options on the one hand and for training of the teaching staff on the other.
The aim of the "Digital Blackboards" project is, on the one hand, to advise schools and educational institutions as appropriate and needs-based as possible on the procurement and use of digital boards in the classroom and, on the other hand, to give manufacturers feedback from school and university practice that will help improve their products can contribute.
FraMoLe
Mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets call traditional learning spaces into question. Learning can therefore increasingly take place outside of institutionalized spaces, in short: learning becomes "mobile". This phenomenon is followed by numerous (school) organizational, technical, educational, learning and motivational psychological as well as legal questions, which is why the fraMoLe project deals with mobile learning in Frankfurt.
As one of the main research areas of the Frankfurt Technology Center [: Media], mobile learning is currently being looked at more closely from an interactionist-constructivist perspective. The main question is to what extent interaction options with mobile devices can promote individual learning or motivate learners.
FraDesk
For the coordination and documentation of inquiries from the schools, but also for the documentation of the research and development activities of the FTzM or general project documentation, the ticket system "fraDesk" was used as part of an aFuE project (application-related research and development at universities of applied sciences, funded by the BMBF ) developed. Inquiries and projects are recorded and managed as "tickets" in this software. As part of the fraLine project, it is also used to document the processing of problem and malfunction reports from schools and for internal knowledge transfer. The researchers at the center use fraDesk as a data collection tool. Since the fraDesk is free software, it is also available to other institutions. FraDesk is an open source product and is now used by numerous government agencies and school IT support organizations.
Media educational and media didactic projects
In addition to supporting IT and digital media in schools, the FTzM also subdivides other projects with a focus on media education in schools. Seminars are held for teachers in Frankfurt, mainly IT officers, and for school administrators in Frankfurt schools to support them in their daily work with digital media in schools. There is also the offer of media-pedagogical-technical teaching support, which offers the teachers technical, media-didactic or conceptual support and can be booked free of charge. For providers of media training in the Frankfurt area, the FTzM operates the online platform "Regional Media Education in Frankfurt am Main", on which providers such as the preventive youth protection of the city of Frankfurt am Main, the state education authority, the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt am Main and others can publish their events and a profile.
FraMediale
Every year and a half, the FTzM organizes fraMediale , a specialist conference and trade fair on the subject of digital media in educational institutions at the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences . FraMediale is a supraregional platform for the exchange of media education research and school / university media education and should thereby contribute to the learning-promoting integration of digital media. FraMediale sees itself as a bridge between media education research and media education practice in schools and universities. The aim is the sustainable integration of digital media in educational institutions that is conducive to learning. The event is primarily aimed at teachers, school administrators, university teachers, media educators and students. Participants, speakers and workshop leaders of the supraregional event come from different educational regions in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. FraMediale was launched in 2015 together with the nationwide initiative "No education without media - KBoM!" carried out. At fraMediale 2017, the Society for Media Education and Communication Culture - GMK was added as a new cooperation partner.
At the core of fraMediale 2014 were short impulses and ideas on current developments in lectures and exhibits focusing on "personalized learning - bring your OWN device". The fraMediale 2015 was focused on "Resistance". At fraMediale 2017 these ideas were further developed under the title "Tension? Potentials".
The FTzM has been awarding the fraMediale prize "Digital Learning: Reality, Science & Fiction" since 2014 as part of fraMediale, which recognizes innovative and future-oriented ideas for the use of digital media in teaching and learning contexts. Prizes are awarded in four categories. The projects of the award winners are presented in short video clips.
Research workshop for media education
Methods that were used in research projects or qualification papers are often creative, innovative and inspiring. In most cases, however, these methods are only published in the relevant studies. University seminars and method textbooks usually also focus on traditional and established approaches and methods. However, current issues in media education sometimes reveal their limits. Young academics and students - in educational sciences, media and communication studies and teaching - are therefore increasingly interested in exploring the discipline of media education empirically-analytically and normatively-reflexively, but also using practical, participatory, development- and design-oriented approaches. The publication "Research Workshop Media Education: Practice - Theory - Method" highlights the "methodological treasures" of media education-oriented research projects and presents them on a database-supported website - similar to a "Cochrane Library" - as well as in print publications. This shows the heterogeneous spectrum of creative and innovative methods that are useful for researching media-pedagogical questions and phenomena. The publication project contributes to the discussion of experiences with the limits and possibilities of traditional approaches and methods in the context of media educational research, promotes the discussion of innovative methods and their acceptance within the scientific community, and gives students and young researchers methodological and theoretical orientation.
BakSI
The Federal Working Group of Support Organizations and Initiatives "BakSI" deals with topics related to IT organization and support in and for schools. The working group was founded in 2004 as a platform for the informal exchange of the following five school support initiatives: S3 - School Support Service Bremen, 3S - School Support Service Hamburg, fraLine at the FTzM of the FH Frankfurt am Main; the regional media center Gießen-Vogelsberg (M @ AUS) and the state media center Stuttgart. There are no permanent members. Everyone who is interested in the topic is welcome. Not only school support initiatives, but also representatives of school authorities, ministries, school and media organizations who either want to present their ideas and concepts or are just starting out in their media development and want suggestions / exchange / advice.
