Jardín Botánico del Plan de la Laguna is a national park and botanical garden in El Salvador .

The park is located in Antiguo Cuscatlán , around 9 kilometers southwest of the capital San Salvador near the Carretera Panamericana Nº 1. The national park includes a botanical garden that is open to the public. The nature reserve is located on the edge of a former volcanic area.

history

The name Plan de La Laguna comes from the time when there was a pond (Spanish laguna ) at the bottom of a crater for many centuries . In the 18th century after the last volcanic eruption in the area, the lagoon and parts of the volcanic landscape were drained by the earthquake of 1873 and, over time, turned into fertile land. It was used for agriculture for livestock , arable farming and forestry with its old trees.

In the sixties and seventies part of the area was built on by housing estates, and the remaining undeveloped area was given to a private association for the conservation and management as a botanical garden .

Botanical Garden

The Jardín Botánico La Laguna was opened on December 22nd, 1978. It has a total area of ​​30 hectares, of which 3.15 hectares with a flat topography is available for visitors. The remaining areas are a nature reserve and not open to the public. The Jardín Botánico La Laguna at a height of 815 meters above sea level is divided into 32 zones with various collections of plants, labeled according to the type of plant, common names and scientific names, including ferns , desert plants, medicinal plants , house and allotment gardens, orchids , Bromeliads and areas of native vegetation. The average temperature is 23 ° Celsius and a relative humidity of 75%. The garden is home to around 3,500 species of plants.

There is also a library and a cafeteria in the entrance building of the Jardín Botánico La Laguna .
