Antiguo Cuscatlán is a municipality in El Salvador in the La Libertad department southwest of the capital San Salvador in its metropolitan area and east of the departmental capital Santa Tecla . The city emerged from the former metropolis of the Pipil , Cuzcatlan .

Surname

The place name Cuscatlán ( Nahuatl Cōzcatlān or Koskatlan , Nawat -name Kuskatan or Kushkatan ) consists of the word components cōzcatl (Nawat: kuskat or kushkat , "necklace", "jewels") and the locative ending -tlān (Nawat: -tan ) and is as "Land of Jewels" or "Land of Wealth" interpreted. Antiguo Cuscatlán is Spanish for "Old Cuscatlán", which distinguishes it from the Department of Cuscatlán , in which Antiguo Cuscatlán is not located.

history

According to tradition, the old Cuzcatlan (Kuskatan) was founded in 1054 by the Toltec king Cē Acatl Tōpīltzin Quetzalcōātl . Archaeological finds in Antiguo Cuzcatlan and Izalco indicate, however, that the Pipil culture in Cuzcatlan existed before the year 900, so that the Nahua immigration to this area had already taken place well before that. In old Cuzcatlan and its surroundings, ten thousand to twelve thousand people lived scattered around the then crater lake ( maar ) of Cuzcatlan.

From around 1200 Cuzcatlan was the capital of the empire of the same name , which covered an area of about 10,000 km², bounded to the west by the Río Paz , today's border between El Salvador and Guatemala, and to the north and east by the Río Lempa .

The Spanish conquistador Pedro de Alvarado reached the city of Cuzcatlan on June 17, 1524, which he was unable to capture. He left on July 21st.

In 1525 Gonzalo de Alvarado founded the city of San Salvador not far from Cuzcatlan , which he had to leave after a revolt. Diego de Alvarado founded the city of San Salvador for the second time in 1528 and forced Cuzcatlan to give up on November 23, 1528. In 1540 the entire area was subjected to the former rule of Cuzcatlan.

During the Spanish colonial period, Cuzcatlan lost its importance to nearby San Salvador . After El Salvador gained independence, Antiguo Cuscatlán did not even receive the status of a departmental capital.

With the growth of San Salvador from the second half of the 20th century, the importance of Antiguo Cuscatlán as a suburb of the capital grew. Service companies and wealthy citizens settled here. The place is also home to three private universities.
