The Universities of Applied Sciences Hesse (HAW Hessen) is a consortium of five state Hessian Universities of Applied Sciences (Haws).

Forerunners of the HAW Hessen were institutions that had been renamed several times, namely the "Rectors' Conference of the Universities of Applied Sciences of the State of Hesse (RHF)" (from 1972), "Rectors' Conference of the Hessian Universities of Applied Sciences (RHF)" (from 1973), the "Rectors' Conference of Hessian Universities of Applied Sciences (RHF)" (from 1981) and the "Conference of Hessian University of Applied Sciences (KHF)" (from 1999).

The core tasks of the HAW Hessen are to represent the interests of the Hessian universities of applied sciences, the formation of political will, the dialogue with politics and the public as well as Hessian university politics . Education and research policy challenges at national and European level are also discussed. The aim of this conference is to secure and expand the competitiveness of the participating HAWs.

Around 30 percent of all Hessian students are enrolled in over 300 Bachelor and Master courses here. At the HAWs, in addition to the cooperative doctorate, there is also the opportunity to do a doctorate at one of the university-internal or cross-university doctoral centers.
