The Wilhelm Büchner University (WBH) is a German university for applied sciences (university of applied sciences) in private sponsorship based in Darmstadt , Hesse .

By decision of the Hessian Ministry of Science and Art of October 28, 2008, the Wilhelm Büchner University is officially recognized as a non-state university for an unlimited period and in July 2016 it was institutionally accredited by the Science Council.

With almost 6,000 students (as of February 2019), the Wilhelm Büchner University is the largest private university for technology in Germany. The sponsor is the University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt GmbH . It belongs to the German Training Association and is a subsidiary of the Klett Group in Stuttgart.

It is named after the scientist and entrepreneur Wilhelm Büchner , who lived in Pfungstadt in the 19th century. The university has had her name since February 2008, previously it had operated as the Private FernFachhochschule Darmstadt (PFFH for short).

history

The Wilhelm Büchner University was founded in November 1996 under the name Private FernFachhochschule Darmstadt and began studying in 1997 with the diploma course in Computer Science in the department of the same name. The engineering department was set up in 2002 , initially with the diploma course in mechatronics , and since 2003 with the diploma course in electrical engineering .

For the training of the state-certified technicians, the PFFH-Technikum was also founded in 2004 as an institute of the private remote technical college.

In spring 2007 the first four Bachelor courses started.

Since February 2008 the university bears the name of the Pfungstadt scientist, industrialist and educational politician Wilhelm Büchner.

In the same year, the industrial engineering and technology management department was founded.

The first master’s courses have been available at Wilhelm Büchner University since 2009.

At the beginning of 2012, the university expanded its range of postgraduate courses with the master’s degree in Engineering Management (MBA).

In 2013, the new department of energy, environmental and process engineering was added with the bachelor's degree in chemical process engineering .

The two international distance learning courses Technology and Innovation Management (M.Sc.) and Engineering Management (MBA) have existed since January 2015. Both part-time distance learning courses take place exclusively in English - from the study documents to the supervision.

Since mid-2018 the slogan "Mobile University of Technology" has been used for advertising.

The Wilhelm Büchner University has been based in Darmstadt since autumn 2019.
