The European Distance University Hamburg ( Euro-FH ) is a German private distance university based in Hamburg . It started operations in 2003 and offers bachelor's and master's degrees in economics , business law and psychology . The university is officially recognized and accredited by the Science Council. The courses are accredited by FIBAA and are usually completed part-time. It belongs to the Deutsche Weiterbildungsgesellschaft and is an indirect subsidiary of the Klett Group in Stuttgart .

history

Headquarters of the Fernhochschule in Hamburg-Rahlstedt (2012)

The European Fernhochschule Hamburg was on 21 November 2001 in the legal form of a limited liability company into the commercial register at the local court of Hamburg entered. The purpose of the company was the "establishment and (...) operation of the European distance learning university which is currently being established". The company became part of the Deutsche Weiterbildungsgesellschaft, which also includes the Institute for Learning Systems and the Distance Academy for Adult Education . In March 2003, the university was officially recognized by the Hamburg Authority for Science and Research . It was confirmed again in August of the same year by the Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg . The European Distance Learning University in Hamburg then began to conduct the "European Business Administration" course.

Jens-Mogens Holm was appointed the first president. According to the Hamburg Higher Education Act, under certain conditions, studies at the university could also be completed without a university entrance qualification . One year after it was founded, there were around 1,000 students. In 2004, the European Distance Learning University in Hamburg introduced its first MBA course . In addition, courses were offered in areas such as marketing or controlling , which last between four and ten months. The credits achieved could later be counted towards a degree.

Between 2003 and 2005, a study center was set up in Beijing where students can spend time abroad. Two years later, the European Distance University Hamburg moved into a joint building in Hamburg-Rahlstedt together with sister companies such as the Institute for Learning Systems and Distance Academy for Adult Education . Since then, Rahlstedt has been one of the most important German locations for distance learning schools. Furthermore, the European Distance University Hamburg has been working with partner universities abroad since 2005. There are currently eight, including from China, the United States and Great Britain.

In 2010 the European Distance Learning University in Hamburg had over 5,000 students. In the same year, a doctoral scholarship was offered for the first time as part of a cooperation with the Faculty of Education at Bielefeld University . In 2012, an updated online campus was put into operation, which included virtual working groups, among other things. Later, the European Distance Learning University in Hamburg also introduced an offer that can also include lectures at the Hamburg site. In 2012, Stiftung Warentest rated a distance learning course in business administration with a grade of 1.8 in another test.

organization

The Presidium consists of a President and a maximum of four Vice-Presidents. The president and at least one of the vice-presidents must be professors of the university. While the President heads the Presidium and represents the European Distance University Hamburg externally, two of the Vice Presidents are currently acting as managing directors of the sponsoring company. The administration of the university is headed by a chancellor suggested by the sponsoring company. The Senate, to which eight professors belong, is responsible for the self-administration of the European Distance Learning University Hamburg. In 2013, the Science Council judged the management, organization and administration to be "largely in line with the university and inherently consistent".

The university conducts research in three so-called clusters for self-directed learning and learning methods within the framework of part-time studies, European management approaches and cultures as well as course-related topics, especially in the master’s courses.

The university is advised by a board of trustees on scientific and economic issues. In addition, it has set up a “Finance and Management” expert advisory board with high-ranking representatives from science and practice, which advises the university on scientific and economic issues in order to actively promote cooperation between science and practice.

courses

Currently (04/2019) the Euro-FH offers 25 bachelor's degree programs, 21 master’s degree programs and 41 certificate courses. The European Distance University Hamburg works without semester operation. The only exception is evening studies, in which the bachelor's degree programs "Psychology (B.Sc.)" and "Business Administration & Business Psychology (BA)" with accompanying lectures in Hamburg, which can be started on March 15 or September 15. The European Distance Learning University in Hamburg provides all students with the material they need for their course. Students are looked after by lecturers - so-called tutors - who, for example, also check submitted assignments. Examinations are carried out in twelve centers, ten of which are in Germany and one each in Austria ( Vienna ) and Switzerland ( Zurich ). In addition, students abroad can also take exams at German consulates and embassies, Goethe Institutes and recognized German schools.

Cooperation relationships and partner universities

The Euro-FH maintains partnerships and cooperative relationships with universities in Germany and abroad:

At universities outside Germany, international seminars are planned as part of the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs.

There is also cooperation with the aim of exchanging and further developing study programs / courses with the Institute for Learning Systems (ILS) and the Distance Academy for Adult Education (both also part of the Klett Group), the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (IML) and providers of specialist courses and advanced training such as Eins Plus and ABELS KALLWASS STITZ .

Through a cooperation with the Institute for University Cooperation and International Doctoral Programs (IHP), an international doctoral study at the University of Gloucestershire (Great Britain) is possible in order to obtain the academic degree of Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

criticism

In 2014, the university came under fire for its MBA programs. On Spiegel Online, journalist Bärbel Schwertfeger criticized the low admission criteria in connection with aggressive marketing. The student advisory service would be more of a "sales pitch". In conversations conducted on a test basis, false information would be provided, especially with regard to the comparability of the Master of Business Administration from the European Distance Learning University in Hamburg with degrees from other institutions. In Germany, too, “it is by no means irrelevant where you do an MBA.” You are also “generous” when it comes to crediting previous achievements and further training. Instead of a first degree, as the MBA actually requires, "vocational training, professional and management experience and a three-module master's entry program" would suffice. In the opinion of the journalist, the Graduate Management Admission Test of the European Distance Learning University in Hamburg is “window dressing”, since a telephone interview with a professor is also offered as an alternative. In her article, Schwertfeger also mentioned a test by Stiftung Warentest from February 2014, which rated the quality of advice from the European Distance Learning University in Hamburg as "low".

The Euro-FH rejected the allegations in a statement as "unilateral and unjustified".
