The Institute for Learning Systems (ILS) is a German distance learning school based in Hamburg . It was founded by Bertelsmann in 1977 and has been part of the Klett Group since 1997 . With around 80,000 customers annually, the ILS is the largest representative in the industry.

history

Headquarters in Hamburg (2013)

In 1977, Bertelsmann founded the ILS as the successor to the Hamburg Distance Learning Institute. The company initially employed around 30 people and offered 35 courses. Since 1980, the ILS has also been looking after schoolchildren who are abroad for a longer period on behalf of the Federal Foreign Office . By 1986, courses for the entire spectrum of teaching in grades 5 to 10 were set up in all three types of school. After German reunification in 1990, the number of students at the ILS rose to a total of 50,000. In the mid-1990s, the demand in the market for distance learning fell sharply, which is why the subsidiaries in France and the Czech Republic were sold.

In 1997 the Klett Group took over the ILS. At that time, their distance learning schools achieved a combined turnover of around 100 million German marks . They played an important role in the transformation of the Klett Group from a school book publisher to an education provider. In the following ten years the demand for courses at the ILS multiplied. The main reason for this was the increasing acceptance by employers. In 2003 the ILS founded the state-recognized private distance learning university Euro-FH . To this day, the ILS has provided various distance learning services for the Euro-FH, for example in the areas of logistics and production. In 2008, the ILS and its sister companies contributed around a quarter of the Klett Group's revenues. From 2006 to 2008 a new education center for the ILS was built in Hamburg-Rahlstedt, with an office area of around 11,000 square meters. Seminar rooms and the production of teaching materials are also located in the building.

Correspondence courses

In the beginning, the ILS mainly sent its teaching materials by post. Since 2002, e-learning (referred to as “distance e-learning” by the ILS, also blended learning ) has played an increasingly important role. For example, content is conveyed in web-based applications and students are supported in chats and webinars . The ILS has been operating an online study center since 1999, where students can network, exchange information, download study documents in electronic form and manage their grades and courses. In addition, the ILS in 2012 as the first supplier for some distance learning has an iPad - App released, which allows mobile access to the entire teaching materials from within the app. In all courses, tasks have to be processed regularly, which the ILS corrects and sends back. For this purpose, the company employs around 750 tutors who also support the students in other matters.

All courses at the ILS can be started at any time, there are no fixed start dates. Three types of degrees can be obtained at the ILS: For internal degrees, a certificate is issued that provides information about the content of the course taken. State qualifications are taken either on site in Hamburg or in a state partner school. Public (legal) degrees are awarded by national or international certification bodies with which the ILS works. These include, for example, the chambers of industry and commerce .

Cooperations

The ILS's partner is the Hamburg authority for schools and vocational training . For some courses, the ILS also works with other organizations: For example, in 2003 a cooperation with the Association of Contract Footballers began . The aim was to support footballers with training and further education who would like to take up another job after their sporting career. In addition, in cooperation with Lufthansa Technik and the Frankfurt am Main Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the distance learning course to become an “industrial foreman aerospace engineering” was created. According to the ILS, other large companies such as Deutsche Bahn or Deutsche Bank also rely on the offer of distance learning.

Certification

The ILS courses are approved by the State Central Office for Distance Learning in Cologne . This is seen as a quality feature for correspondence courses. In addition, the ILS was the first German distance learning school to be certified according to ISO 29990 . The standard was introduced in autumn 2010 and sets international standards for the education and training industry. In addition, some courses are AZAV certified. The WirtschaftsWoche certified the ILS as having the “highest level of trust” in the “Customer Trust Ranking 2014”. In 2015, the ILS achieved first place in a test of several distance learning providers by the German Institute for Service Quality .
