A web seminar or webinar in its original form is a seminar that is given over the World Wide Web . The neologism webinar is a portmanteau word from the words web (from the world wide web ) and seminar and has been registered as a word mark at the German Patent and Trademark Office since 2003 . Events of all kinds that take place in the virtual classroom are now known as webinars. Examples of this are marketing events, lectures or online meetings.

definition

In contrast to the webcast on demand, in which the information is only transmitted in one direction, a webinar is designed to be interactive and enables two-way communication between the speaker and the participants. A webinar is “live” in the sense that the information is transmitted within a program with a specified start and end time. In most cases, the speaker's oral explanations of what is shown on the screen are transmitted via VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol). This usually works the other way round, if the participant has a headset or a microphone connected to their computer and the webinar moderator has given them speaking rights. In some cases (especially in the early days of the webinars) the audience had to have the audio signal transmitted over a separate telephone circuit. Today several people can talk to each other at the same time via VoIP. Other typical interaction options are downloading files, asking questions via chat or taking part in surveys .

Possible applications

Several, theoretically unlimited, people can take part in webinars. This is used, for example, for courses or online press conferences . As a result, the functions of common solutions are tailored to these scenarios: robust event invitation management, interactive surveys and comprehensive evaluations of the participants.

A distinction must be made between solutions that concentrate on the virtual seminar room and platform solutions that have a public marketplace for online seminars that everyone can participate in or where you can offer webinars yourself. Platform solutions include more functions related to the organization and promotion of a webinar, e.g. B. Social media, event forums, a landing page , affiliate programs, etc. In addition, such a platform can also be implemented in your own corporate design, which larger companies usually choose as the solution.

Trademark protection

Since the word mark Webinar is protected until 2023, word combinations such as web seminars, online seminars, live webcasts, web interviews or web conferences are used as alternatives . There are doubts as to whether the existing trademark protection is legally enforceable. The deletion of the trademark registration has been requested.
