The City Gate , previously Büro Center Nibelungenplatz ( BCN ), originally Shell high-rise , is a high-rise in Frankfurt am Main . The building, originally just under 90 meters high, was occupied on October 15, 1966 and served as the headquarters of the Shell Group. In 1993 the building was extensively renovated and increased to 110 meters. To this day it is the tallest building in the Nordend district .

location

The skyscraper is located on Nibelungenplatz, an important and busy hub in the north end. There the Nibelungen- and Rothschildallee ( Frankfurter Alleenring , B 8 ) meet the Friedberger Landstraße ( B 3 ) and the district streets Nordendstraße and Hallgartenstraße.

history

construction

The skyscraper was part of a development plan encompassing the entire northern avenue ring, which envisaged a conversion to an expressway and point skyscrapers at all important road crossings. The plan was not pursued any further, except for another building at the intersection with Eschersheimer Landstrasse . The skyscraper on Nibelungenplatz was built from 1964 to 1966 for the mineral oil company Shell and at that time it was the tallest skyscraper in Frankfurt am Main until 1972. The initiator was also the real estate investor Josef Buchmann . In the basement - in line with the fear of nuclear war at the time - a nuclear shelter was set up in an emergency , which is used as an underground car park.

modification

The original facade made of aluminum panels, following the unadorned international style , no longer exists today. In 1993 the skyscraper was rebuilt by Novotny Mähner Associates , it was clad with the current glass facade and provided with a panoramic elevator. Since then, the base development has made reference to the surrounding buildings. Two stairwells were installed and a rotunda was built on top of the existing house. An American investor purchased the building in 2015. Subsequently, renovation and redesign work was carried out in the building and in the outdoor facilities.

Others

  • The high-rise office building was a permanent location for the ZDF television series Ein Case for Two until 2013 , as the lawyer had his fictional office in this building in the rotunda on the 27th floor. The panoramic view of the Frankfurt skyline always shown in the episodes is a distinguishing feature of the series.
  • The skyscraper is u. a. Seat of the General Consulate of the Kingdom of Spain , the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences , Berami eV, the Bürgerhospital (administration), a law firm, an insurance broker and a supermarket.
  • In May 2019, Radio Group Holding GmbH and local broadcaster Antenne Frankfurt will move into the 27th floor of the building.
