The Archdiocese of Abidjan ( Latin : Archidioecesis Abidianensis ) is an archdiocese based in Abidjan ( Ivory Coast ). It includes the dioceses of Yopougon in the former suburb of Abidjans Yopougon , Agboville and Grand-Bassam in the old port city of Grand-Bassam . The area of the archbishopric is around 3810 km².

history

On June 28, 1895, the Ivory Coast area was separated from the Gold Coast Apostolic Prefecture (today: Ghana) and an Ivory Coast Apostolic Prefecture was established. On November 17, 1911, part of it was cut off to build the Apostolic Prefecture of Korhogo . On the same day the prefecture was elevated to a vicariate . On April 9, 1940, the area around Sassandra was separated and appointed its own Apostolic Vicariate. The name was changed to Apostolic Vicariate Abidjan, as it only comprised a third of the eponymous Ivory Coast. Another loss of territory took place on May 17, 1951 with the establishment of the Bouaké prefecture .

Archdiocese

On September 14, 1955, the Vicariate Apostolic under the direction of the Africa missionary Jean-Baptiste Boivin was appointed Archdiocese. Eight years later, parts of the archdiocese and the dioceses of Bouaké and Katiola were built into the Abengourou diocese , those of Grand-Bassam and Yopougon at the sole expense of the archdiocese on June 8, 1982.

Since Bernard Cardinal Yago , the first Ivorian cardinal , the Archdiocese of Abidjan has traditionally been associated with the cardinal dignity.
