Bernard Agré
Bernard Cardinal Agré (born March 2, 1926 in Monga, Ivory Coast , † June 9, 2014 in Paris , France ) was Archbishop of Abidjan .
Life
Bernard Agré studied philosophy and Catholic theology and was ordained a priest on July 20, 1953 by the Vicar Apostolic of Abidjan, Jean-Baptiste Boivin SMA . He completed his doctoral studies at the Pontifical University of Urbania with a doctorate in canon law . He was school principal in Dabou and rector of the pre-seminary in Bingerville as well as parish priest in Treichville and vicar general of the Archdiocese of Abidjan . On December 8, 1961, Pope John XXIII awarded him the honorary title of House Prelate of His Holiness .
On June 8, 1968, Pope Paul VI appointed him . to the first bishop of Man . He was ordained episcopal by the Archbishop of Abidjan, Bernard Yago , on October 3, 1968. Co- consecrators were Bernardin Gantin , Archbishop of Cotonou in Benin, and Guy-Marie Riobé , Bishop of Orléans in France. On March 6, 1992, Pope John Paul II appointed him bishop of the diocese of Yamoussoukro, which was newly established on the same date .
On December 19, 1994, John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Abidjan.
The College of Cardinals was one Bernard Agré since the Consistory of 21 February 2001 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Giovanni Crisostomo in Rome. In the same year he caused a sensation at the Synod of Bishops when he accused the northern industrial nations of shamelessly pillaging Africa. Some countries are interested in Africa only in the exploitation of natural resources, he said.
He was a member of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples . In Ivory Coast he was President of the Episcopal Commission for Social and Charitable Activities. From 1985 to 1991 he was President of the Episcopal Conference Régionale de l'Afrique de l'Ouest Francophone (CERAO) . From 1972 to 1996 he was chairman of the Comité Episcopal Panafricain pour les Communications Sociales (CEPACS) .
Agré participated in the 2005 conclave in which Benedict XVI. was chosen. On May 2, 2006, Agrés accepted his resignation due to reasons of age. Because he exceeded the age limit of 80 years, he did not take part in the 2013 conclave , in which Pope Francis was elected. After falling ill, Cardinal Agré was admitted to a Paris hospital in 2014, where he died on June 9 of the same year.
