Jean-Baptiste Boivin
Jean-Baptiste Boivin SMA (born March 9, 1898 in Hénanbihen , France , † April 24, 1970 ) was first Vicar Apostolic , later first Archbishop of Abidjan .
Life
Jean-Baptiste Boivin was ordained a priest on December 22, 1923 and joined the Society of African Missions on August 19, 1926, where he took his vows in 1928.
Pope Pius XII appointed him two weeks after his election as Vicar Apostolic of Ivory Coast and Titular Bishop of Onuphis . The episcopal ordination received Boivin on May 30 of that year by François-Jean-Marie Serrand , Bishop of Saint-Brieuc . Co- consecrators were Hippolyte Tréhiou , Bishop of Vannes , and Ernest Hauger , Vicar Apostolic of the Gold Coast (now Ghana ). In 1940 the Apostolic Vicariate Ivory Coast was renamed the Apostolic Vicariate Abidjan.
With the elevation to the archbishopric on September 14, 1955, Jean-Baptiste Boivin finally became the first archbishop of Abidjan. On June 10, 1959, he resigned and was taken over by Pope John XXIII. Appointed Titular Archbishop of Viminacium .
