Bernard Yago

Bernard Cardinal Yago (born July 1916 in Pass, Ivory Coast , † October 5, 1997 in Abidjan ) was Archbishop of Abidjan .

Bernard Yago studied in Abidjan and Paris trays Catholic theology and philosophy . He received on 1 May 1947, the sacrament of Holy Orders , and then worked as a chaplain and teacher at two seminars in his home. After further studies he was an advisor to the Catholic Action in Ivory Coast in 1959 and 1960 .

On April 5, 1960 Pope John XXIII appointed him . to the Archbishop of Abidjan . The Pope himself donated his episcopal ordination on May 8 of the same year. Co- consecrators were Napoléon-Alexandre Labrie CIM , Titular Bishop of Hilta , and Fulton John Sheen , Titular Bishop of Caesariana and Auxiliary Bishop in New York .

Bernard Yago participated in the Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1965 and was one of the first signatories of the Catacomb Pact in 1965 . On February 2, 1983, Pope John Paul II accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Crisogono in the college of cardinals . Cardinal Yago resigned the leadership of the Archdiocese of Abidjan on December 19, 1994 for reasons of age. He died on October 5, 1997 in Abidjan and was buried in the local cathedral .
