The diocese of Grand-Bassam ( lat . : Dioecesis Bassam Maioris ) is a Roman Catholic diocese based in Grand-Bassam on the Ivory Coast in West Africa .
history
The first Catholic missions to Ivory Coast in the 17th century were unsuccessful. In 1893 the country became a French colony . The first governor, Louis-Gustave Binger , although a Protestant himself, called the Catholic missionaries into the country. The Society for African Missions from Lyon was the first to arrive and landed on October 28, 1895 in Grand-Bassam and founded the first churches. The area of the diocese belonged to the Archdiocese of Abidjan before it was raised to the diocese on June 8, 1982.
