history
VfB Homberg was created in 1969 from a merger between Homberger SV and SpVgg Hochheide . The founding year was 1889, the year of the founding of the oldest predecessor club SpVgg Hochheide.
The footballers of the Homberger Spielverein had their heyday in the 1920s and 1930s when they played in the West German Gauliga Niederrhein . Another high point came in 1953 when HSV moved into the final of the German Amateur Championship and lost 3-2 to SSG 09 Bergisch Gladbach in front of 30,000 spectators in the Wuppertal stadium . In 1964 the club was able to rise to the Regionalliga West , but had to accept relegation after just one year.
After the clubs merged in 1969, VfB Homberg was able to establish itself in higher-class amateur football and, after the introduction of the third division, played in the Lower Rhine League . In 2010 VfB Homberg became champions of the Niederrheinliga and rose to the NRW League for the 2010/11 season . In the seasons 2012/13, 2013/14 and 2014/15 Homberg played in the fifth-class Oberliga Niederrhein , in 2015/16 they joined the sixth-class Landesliga Niederrhein Group 2 and managed to get promoted again. Three years later , the Homberger rose to the Regionalliga West , whose season 2019/20 was prematurely canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The relegation was suspended, so that VfB Homberg will also compete in the Regionalliga West in 2020/21.
