Career

Abel played 54 league games from 1984 to 1988 for the then second division club Rot-Weiß Oberhausen . The defender scored two goals. As an 18-year-old he made the leap to the first team under coach Friedel Elting and made his debut on November 17, 1984 in the 1: 3 defeat against the Stuttgarter Kickers in the second division. From 1988 to 1990 he played for 1. FC Bocholt in the Oberliga Nordrhein and then moved to league competitor Sportfreunde Katernberg for one season . From 1991 to 1997 he played again for Oberhausen in the Oberliga and Regionalliga West . Günter Abel played a total of 203 league games for Rot-Weiß Oberhausen and scored 15 goals. In the 1997/98 season, Abel moved to FC Remscheid , who were then playing in the regional league. He ended his playing career at SV Straelen in the Oberliga, where he played until 2000.

Following his active career, Abel worked as a trainer. He looked after VfB Lohberg and Weseler SV before returning to Rot-Weiß Oberhausen as coach of the second team at the turn of the year 2005/06. In May 2006 he took over as coach for the relegation-threatened regional league team from RWO for the last four games of the season. He could not prevent the club's relegation and then returned to the reserve team, where he stayed until June 2008. In December 2008 he took over the Lower Rhine division VfB Homberg , with Volker Abel as assistant coach. The Homberger were beaten with 8 points bottom of the table. With 33 points achieved in the second half of the season, relegation was prevented. Also in the 2009/10 season Günter Abel remained head coach in Homberg and made the relegation candidate a promotion aspirant. In the preliminary round, the Homberger earned 31 points and took third place in the league after the first round. At the end of the season there was the association league championship and promotion to the NRW league . In August 2011 he acquired the A- trainer license at the Kaiserau sports school . Until the end of the 2014/15 season, Abel worked in the Oberliga Niederrhein as coach of VfB Homberg. In April 2016, he succeeded the dismissed Guido Naumann at the regional division FSV Duisburg . With the club, he missed the league promotion by taking third place. After a bad start to the new season and falling to the bottom of the table, he was released in September 2016. From July to October 2017 Abel looked after the national division club SV Sonsbeck . From March 2018 to February 2019 he trains the district division TSV Wachtendonk-Wankum . In April 2019 he took over the coaching position at the relegation-threatened national league club FSV Vohwinkel , with whom he was relegated to the district league.

His son Florian played as a professional for Rot-Weiß Oberhausen until the summer of 2012 and now for the first division club 1. FC Bocholt .
