Osterländisch is an Upper Saxon dialect that is still used in Saxony around Leipzig , with flowing, fuzzy borders up to Eilenburg and Torgau . Further forms of this dialect are spoken in Saxony-Anhalt around Wittenberg , Bitterfeld-Wolfen and Jessen as North Upper Saxon . In Halle (Saale) in Saxony-Anhalt, with the independent dialect Hallisch , all the way to Brandenburg , around Herzberg , Bad Liebenwerda and Elsterwerda , Northeast-Osterländisch is spoken. In Schraden Schraden-Osterländisch is spoken. These dialects arose during the predominantly Low German and Flemish settlement of northern Saxony between the 11th and 13th centuries.

Surname

The name Osterländisch can be traced back to the historical Thuringian-Saxon region of Osterland , on whose territory the language area extends.
