Historic regions of Sweden

Österland was one of the four historic parts of Sweden .

Österland comprised the southern part of what is now Finland , which has been under Swedish influence since the 12th century. Since 1362 Österland was represented in the Swedish election. In 1556 , a duchy of Finland was created for a short time from the provinces of Österland for Johann , Gustav Wasa's son . This became obsolete when John himself became King of Sweden in 1568. Even then, the name Österland was given up. As a result of the Russo-Swedish War (1808-1809) Sweden ceded Finland to Russia in 1809 , in which it became the Grand Duchy of Finland .
