The NRW League was one of the ten major leagues that make up the fifth highest division in German men's football. The league comprised 18 clubs from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia , which played for promotion to the regional league or against relegation to the association league. The league started playing on August 15, 2008 and replaced the upper leagues of North Rhine and Westphalia . The last champion was FC Viktoria Köln . After the 2011/12 season, the league was dissolved again.
history
The councils of the three to the West German Football and Athletics Association (WFLV) member associations ( Football Association Mittelrhein (FVM), Lower Rhine Football Association (FVN) and Football and Athletics Association of Westphalia (FLVW)) decided the two top leagues Westphalia and North Rhine at the end of To dissolve the 2007/08 season and to set up a single-track NRW league as the fifth highest division in German football at the beginning of the 2008/09 season .
The 2007/08 season was set as a binding qualification period. The economic and technical-organizational admission requirements were laid down in a "NRW League Statute" by the WFLV Presidium, which was responsible for this division. The following clubs qualified for the first season:
- Schwarz-Weiß Essen , SSVg Velbert , MSV Duisburg II , Germania Dattenfeld , Alemannia Aachen II , Bonner SC and Fortuna Düsseldorf II from the Oberliga Nordrhein 2007/08.
- Fortuna Cologne as runner-up in the Mittelrhein Association League, replacing the VfL Leverkusen champion (see below), and Rot-Weiss Essen II as the Niederrhein Association league champion.
- Westfalia Herne , SV Schermbeck , Hammer SpVg , FC Gütersloh 2000 , Delbrücker SC , Arminia Bielefeld II and Sportfreunde Oestrich-Iserlohn from the Oberliga Westfalen 2007/08. The sports fans from Oestrich-Iserlohn did not qualify as 14th in the upper league, but moved up for Germania Gladbeck (see below) after Rot Weiss Ahlen II waived .
- VfB Hüls and SG Wattenscheid 09 as champions of the two association leagues Westphalia .
- In addition, the Sportfreunde Siegen received the license for the NRW-Liga in a subsequent procedure after the DFB had initially refused the club the license for the new regional league due to ongoing insolvency proceedings , so that the NRW-Liga played with 19 clubs in the first year.
The athletically qualified teams from Germania Gladbeck and VfL Leverkusen were not approved for the NRW League. The league started on August 15, 2008 with the game Schwarz-Weiß Essen against Arminia Bielefeld II.
Promotion and relegation regulation
2008 to 2011
- Places one and two qualify for promotion to the Regionalliga West .
- At least the teams from rank 17 were relegated, ie with 18 or 19 participants there were at least two or three relegated teams. However, the number of relegated teams was also increased by the number of clubs relegated from the Regionalliga West . Since up to three clubs were relegated from the regional league, this could lead to a maximum of five relegated teams from the NRW league with 18 participating teams.
- The four champions of the following leagues were eligible for promotion to the NRW League: Westphalia (2 seasons), Middle Rhine and Lower Rhine . If an applicant from a playgroup were not admitted, the next team eligible for promotion in the respective division would qualify in its place, provided that it met the admission requirements.
- As a rule, 18 teams took part in the NRW League.
