The West German Football Association (WDFV), based in Duisburg, is one of five subordinate regional associations of the German Football Association . The area of the WDFV roughly covers the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia . The West German Association includes the Lower Rhine and Middle Rhine regional football associations as well as the Westphalian Football and Athletics Association .
The history of the association goes back to the West German game association , which was founded in 1898 (as the "Rheinischer Spiel-Verband") and which dissolved in 1934 as part of the " Gleichschaltung " of sport under the National Socialists. In 1947 it was brought back to life, initially under the name “Football Association of North Rhine-Westphalia” (WFV). The West German Football Association merged in 2002 with the North Rhine Athletics Association to form the West German Football and Athletics Association (WFLV). After the North Rhine Athletics Association resigned in 2016, it was renamed West German Football Association (WDFV) on August 27 of the same year . President is Peter Frymuth. There are currently 4,477 football clubs and a little over 1.7 million members in the association's territory.
The association has been running an educational facility with a focus on sports since 1977. The target group are, on the one hand, the volunteer employees in the state's football and athletics clubs, and on the other hand, the educational center is also the point of contact for all people in North Rhine-Westphalia under the Further Education Act. The qualification center is aimed at all voluntary functionaries in organized sport of the WFLV including its member associations. The teaching work is based on the Duisburger Sportschule Wedau , the SportCongressCentrum Kaiserau in Kamen and the Sportschule Hennef , each with nationwide catchment areas.
