In the area of ​​the West German Football Association (WFV), the Oberliga West was introduced as the new top division in 1947 . As a substructure, the 2nd League West followed in 1949 , which was initially two-pronged. The third division was the national league, which was divided into several seasons. In 1949 these were initially Lower Rhine I and II, Middle Rhine and Westphalia I and II. In 1955 there were a total of ten national leagues in the WFV area.

In 1956, the regional league was replaced by the association league as the third highest division. This was divided into Lower Rhine, Middle Rhine and Westphalia I and II.
