The Sportpark Duisburg (formerly Wedau Sports Park ) is a 200 hectares large sports and recreation area in the south of the Duisburg district center located district of Neudorf . It is one of the largest connected sports parks in Germany and offers, among other things, training and competition facilities for water skiing , wakeboarding , football , ice hockey , athletics , swimming , canoeing and rowing .

history

End of the 19th century the former forest area the company served Krupp of Auskiesung purpose of filling the expenditure incurred by the steel industry slag .

In 1919 Krupp left the area to the city of Duisburg with the stipulation that a sports and recreation area be established there for the Duisburg population.

The pebbles created three lakes: Margaretensee, Bertasee and Barbarasee. Berta and Barbara lakes are connected by canals to the regatta course , which was built between these two lakes to the south.

The sports facilities

The Duisburg regatta track is now an important international and national venue for canoeing, rowing and motor boating. In addition to numerous German championships, the following events took place there:

Rowers, canoeists and runners train on the regatta course in the Wedau sports park

In addition to the swimming stadium, the lido, illuminated night running track, water ski track and other sports facilities, the sports grounds include the Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena with around 31,000 spectators , the home ground of MSV Duisburg , and the ice rink , in which EV Duisburg plays its home games.

Other facilities

In the southern part of the sports park there is the Wedau sports school with the venues of the West German Football and Athletics Association and the State Sports Association of North Rhine-Westphalia , which are based here alongside more than 20 other sports associations. This also includes the federal offices of the German Canoe Association and the German Disabled Sports Association .

The Wedau sports school is located on the premises of the State Sports Association and, according to its own statements, is one of the most important sports schools in Germany. As a talent factory for German football, the DFB viewing tournaments take place several times a year. The Federal Center for Canoe Racing is located on the regatta course .

To the south of the sports park is the approximately three square kilometer recreational area of the Duisburg Sechs-Seen-Platte .

More recent extensions

The artificially created parallel canal (parallel to the regatta course).

The City Council of Duisburg decided on June 12th, 2006 to build a parallel canal on the west bank of the regatta course so that it will continue to meet international standards for canoeing and rowing competitions in the future. For this purpose, around six hectares of forest were cleared in early 2007. Fallow land in the north of Duisburg is to be reforested as a compensation area for the Wedau Forest. In a first construction phase, a branch canal from the regatta route to Lake Berta and a camera track that were already used for the 2007 canoe racing world championships were created. The expansion, which cost a total of € 14 million, was completed in the spring of 2008, with considerable cost increases.

There were protests from residents and environmentalists against these plans, not least because a rare species of bat was supposed to live in the forest and the public was relatively little informed in relation to the size of the project. Alternatives such as the construction of a canal on the eastern side of the regatta track were also suggested, but these were rejected as unsuitable by the administration and sports organizations.

Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz (BUND), Naturschutzbund Deutschland (NABU) and the Schutzgemeinschaft Deutscher Wald (SDW) had spoken out against the measure and filed a lawsuit against the planning approval decision . In the planning approval decision of the city of Duisburg, the immediate completion of the construction project was permitted. An urgent application against this passage in the context of the lawsuit failed both at the Düsseldorf Administrative Court and at the Münster Higher Administrative Court . The courts had put urgency aspects from the funding over the careful examination of the aspects of species and landscape protection.

The parallel canal was officially opened on July 5, 2008. The "Wasserwelt Wedau" includes the parallel canal, a new water playground and a climbing garden. The cost of the entire project is around 18 million euros. In total, just over 6.6 hectares of forest were cleared. As a compensation measure, the city had four new trees planted for each felled tree.

In September 2008 the name was changed from Sportpark Wedau to Sportpark Duisburg in order to better illustrate the importance of the facilities beyond the district.

In 2013 a new youth hostel was built in the northern part of the sports park. This replaced an older one near the municipal clinics and focuses on nature and sport.
