Regattabahn Duisburg
The Duisburg Regattabahn is a competition course for canoeing and rowing . It is 2180 m long and 120 m wide and is located in the Duisburg sports park in the south of the Neudorf district of Duisburg . The Sportpark Duisburg is considered the largest contiguous sports park of its kind in Germany. The regatta course was built in the early 1930s as part of gravel extraction, inaugurated in 1935 and is now the venue for national and international competitions in canoeing and rowing. Motorboat races were also held on the route .
In the finish area of the regatta course is the Federal Center for Canoe Racing and the regatta course building, which housed parts of the former Duisburg Sports Office. The wooded area around the regatta course is often used by recreational athletes for jogging . The regatta course is completely surrounded by a running track that is illuminated in the morning and evening.
On June 12, 2006, the City Council of Duisburg decided to build a parallel canal on the west bank of the regatta course so that it would continue to meet international standards for canoeing and rowing competitions in the future. After a controversial discussion in the Duisburg citizenship, around 6.6 hectares of forest were cleared for this purpose. In a first construction phase, a branch canal from the regatta route to Lake Berta and a camera track that were already used for the 2007 Canoe World Cup were built.
On July 5, 2008, the parallel canal was officially opened and the water playground and a climbing garden created as part of the project were also released for use. These measures, which are intended to promote the tourist use of the area, were incorporated into a master plan for the development of the Duisburg sports park. The cost of the project totaled € 18 million and was therefore € 4 million more expensive than the original plan.
