The 36th Canoe Racing World Championships took place from August 8th to 12th, 2007 in Duisburg . Competition venue was the regatta course Duisburg in Duisburg Sports Park . The event was organized by the International Canoe Association , and hosted by the German Canoe Association , which is also based in Duisburg.
With 1,400 athletes from 90 nations, the event was the largest canoe world championship to date . On four days of the competition medals were awarded in 27 disciplines of canoe racing: single kayak (K1), two-person kayak (K2) and four-person kayak (K4) for women and men as well as single-canoe (C1), two-person canoe (C2 ) and four-man Canadians (C4) of the men, over 200, 500 and 1000 meters respectively.
The World Championships were also a qualifying regatta for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing .
The competitions showed a clear dominance of the German and Hungarian teams, both of which won nine of the 27 decisions - no other country won more than one title. The German Canoe Association was able to use its home advantage and was in the medal table with 9/6/3 (G / S / B) ahead of Hungary (9/3/6) and Belarus (1/2/1).
The regatta course was sold out on the final days. The high number for canoeing was 17,400 spectators.
Shortly after the World Championships began, the International Canoeing Federation banned the Iranian team from the event. The reason given was that the team had not paid hotel bills and registration fees of 18,000 euros despite repeated requests.
For the first time there was a cultural program as part of the Canoe World Championships. Right next to the regatta course, the Canoe World Championship Plaza offered a colorful program with numerous musical acts, concerts by well-known German performers such as Jan Delay , Joy Denalane , MIA. and Silbermond as well as an open-air concert by the Duisburg Philharmonic . A children's program and numerous gastronomy pavilions rounded off the supporting program, which, according to the organizers, had a further 100,000 visitors.
