The 18th Canoe Sprint World Championships were held in 1983 Finnish Tampere instead. On four days of the competition, medals were awarded in 18 disciplines of canoe racing: single kayak (K1), two-person kayak (K2) and four-person kayak (K4) as well as single-canoe (C1) and two-person canoe (C2) for men , over 500, 1000 and 10,000 meters respectively. For women, it was over 500 meters in K1, K2 and K4.

The GDR team won seven world championship titles. With Birgit Fischer , who won three titles, it also provided the most successful athlete.
