The 19th Canoe Racing World Championships took place from August 15th to 18th, 1985 in Mechelen , Belgium . The venue was the Hazewinkel regatta course.

On four days of the competition, medals were awarded in 18 disciplines of canoe racing: single kayak (K1), two-person kayak (K2) and four-person kayak (K4) as well as single-canoe (C1) and two-person canoe (C2) for men , over 500, 1000 and 10,000 meters respectively. For women, it was over 500 meters in K1, K2 and K4.

With their seven titles, the GDR team became the most successful nation in these world championships. With Birgit Schmidt who won the three titles, they also presented the most successful athlete.
