Rita Kőbán (born April 10, 1965 in Budapest ) is a former Hungarian canoeist . She won 6 Olympic medals, 26 world championship medals and 4 European championship medals.

Career

Until 1988

Rita Kőbán was already successful in the youth field. She won her first international medals in the adult class at the 1985 World Championships . Together with Éva Rakusz, she won the silver medal in a two- person kayak behind Birgit Schmidt and Carsta Kühn from the GDR. In the four-man kayak , the GDR four-man won ahead of the Soviet boat, behind which Katalin Gyulai , Erika Géczi , Éva Rakusz and Rita Kőbán received the bronze medal.

At the 1986 World Championships Birgit Schmidt did not take part because of maternity leave, the GDR team won only one silver medal in the three women's boat classes. In a four-person kayak, the Hungarian boat with Erika Géczi, Erika Mészáros , Éva Rakusz and Rita Kőbán won ahead of the boat from the Soviet Union. The following year Birgit Schmidt was back at the 1987 World Championships and won three gold medals. The Hungarian foursome with Erika Géczi, Rita Kőbán, Katalin Povazsan and Éva Rakusz received the silver medal ahead of the Soviet foursome.

At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul , Rita Kőbán started in two boat classes. In a single kayak she took fourth place behind Bulgarian Wanja Geschewa , Birgit Schmidt and Polish Izabela Dylewska . While Geschewa and Schmidt had a lead of over two seconds, Dylewska was only two tenths of a second ahead of Kőbán. In the four-person kayak, Birgit Schmidt's crew won by one second over Erika Géczi, Erika Mészáros, Éva Rakusz and Rita Kőbán, and the Bulgarians won bronze.

1989 to 1992

In 1989 the women's program at the World Championships in Plovdiv was supplemented by two competitions over 5000 meters each. Rita Kőbán won her only medal in a four-person kayak on the traditional 500-meter course. Together with Katalin Gyulai, Henriette Huber and Erika Mészáros, she received the silver medal behind the boat from the GDR.

The GDR team competed for the last time at the 1990 World Championships in Poznan , but only won three out of five possible gold medals in the women's competitions. In a four- person kayak, the boat from the GDR won ahead of the Hungarians with Éva Dónusz , Henriette Huber, Rita Kőbán and Erika Mészáros. The following year, the German team won four out of five women's competitions at the World Championships in Paris . In a single kayak over 500 meters, the German Katrin Borchert won ahead of Rita Kőbán and Josefa Idem , who competed for Italy . In the four-person kayak, the German crew won ahead of the Hungarians Éva Dónusz, Rita Kőbán, Katalin Gyulai and Erika Mészáros.

At the Olympic regatta in Barcelona only the three competitions over 500 meters were on the program. After a long break, Birgit Schmidt was back in the single kayak and won with 0.36 seconds ahead of Rita Kőbán and Izabela Dylewska. In the two-man kayak, the Germans Ramona Portwich and Anke von Seck won just ahead of the Swedes Agneta Andersson and Susanne Gunnarsson , four tenths of a second behind the Swedes Éva Dónusz and Rita Kőbán crossed the finish line in third place. Rita Kőbán completed her set of medals in a four. Éva Dónusz, Kinga Czigány , Erika Mészáros and Rita Kőbán won with 0.15 seconds ahead of the German crew.

1993 to 1996

Also at the 1993 World Championships , three competitions over 500 meters and two competitions over 5000 meters were on the program. In a four-person kayak over 500 meters, the German boat won ahead of the Swedes and the four Hungarian Olympic champions from last year. In the one over 5000 meters, Rita Kőbán won her only international medal over this distance when she crossed the finish line in second behind Susanne Gunnarsson.

The two 5000 meter competitions were no longer part of the program at the 1994 World Championships in Mexico City , instead three competitions over 200 meters were included. Rita Kőbán won all 200 meter competitions, in a two-man kayak with Éva Laky , in a four-man with Éva Laky, Éva Dónusz and Szilvia Mednyánszky . In addition, Kőbán received the silver medal in the one over 500 meters behind Birgit Fischer, who had taken her maiden name again after divorce. In a four-person kayak over 500 meters, the German crew won ahead of the Hungarians with Éva Dónusz, Kinga Czigány, Rita Kőbán and Szilvia Mednyánszky. The Hungarian sports press named Rita Kőbán Sportswoman of the Year in 1994, replacing the swimmer Krisztina Egerszegi , who had previously received this honor six times in a row.

At the 1995 World Championships in Duisburg , the gold medals in the women's competitions were divided between Germany, Canada and Hungary, each of which provided two winning boats. Rita Kőbán won both single competitions ahead of the Canadian Caroline Brunet . In the four-man competition over 500 meters, the Germans won ahead of the Chinese, behind them Éva Dónusz, Kinga Czigány, Rita Kőbán and Szilvia Mednyánszky received the bronze medal. After the season, Rita Kőbán was honored again as Hungarian Sportswoman of the Year.

Also at the 1996 Olympic Games , only the three competitions over 500 meters were on the program. Rita Kőbán won in the single ahead of Caroline Brunet and Josfa Idem. In the two-person kayak, she and Szilvia Mednyánszky took fourth place, the four-person kayak took ninth place without Kőbán.

From 1998

After a year off, Rita Kőbán was back at the 1998 World Championships in front of a home crowd in Szeged. Together with Kinga Dékány , she won the silver medal over 200 meters and the bronze medal over 500 meters. The four-kayak with Kőbán, Dékány, Erzsébet Viski and Katalin Kovács won over 200 meters. At the 1999 World Championships in Milan , Rita Kőbán won two bronze medals in one over 200 meters and one over 500 meters. The Hungarian foursome with Kőbán, Szilvia Szabó , Erzsébet Viski and Katalin Kovacs won the titles over 200 and over 500 meters.

In 2000 Rita Kőbán took part in the European Championships . She won the single competitions over 200 and over 500 meters. Kovacs, Szabó, Viski and Kőbán won the four-man over 200 meters and finished second over 500 meters behind the German four-man. At the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000 , Kőbán finished sixth in the single. She won her last international medal in a foursome; Kovacs, Szabó, Viski and Kőbán received the silver medal behind the German team.
