Vanya Geschewa

Wanja Geschewa ( Bulgarian Ваня Гешева ; born June 6, 1960 in Brestovitsa , Plovdiv Oblast ) is a former Bulgarian canoeist .

Vanya Geschewa won her first international medal at the 1977 World Championships in Sofia when she and Diana Christowa won bronze in a two-person kayak . In the following year Maria Mintschewa , Wanja Geschewa, Iliana Nikolowa and Natascha Janakiewa won the silver medal in the four- person kayak at the World Championships in Belgrade . At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow , Geschewa won the silver medal in a single kayak, one and a half seconds behind Birgit Fischer from the GDR . After two years without an international medal, Geschewa won the silver medal behind Fischer at the 1983 World Championships . 1984 missed Geschewa due to the Olympic boycott the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

At the 1986 World Championships in Montreal , the winner of the last four World Championships Birgit Schmidt (-Fischer) was absent due to maternity leave. Geschewa won the title in a single kayak ahead of Kathrin Giese from the GDR. Wanja Geschewa and Diana Palijska won the bronze medal in a two-person kayak . At the Olympic Games in 1988 Geschewa and Schmidt met again, Geschewa won the gold medal with a lead of twelve hundredths of a second. Schmidt and Anke Nothnagel won in a two- person kayak in front of Geschewa and Palijska. The GDR boat with Birgit Schmidt also won the bronze medal in the four-man kayak, with Geschewa, Palijska, Ognjana Petrowa and Borislawa Iwanowa behind the Hungarian four-man .
