Josefa Idem (born September 23, 1964 in Goch , North Rhine-Westphalia ) is a former German and since 1992 Italian canoeist and politician ( Partito Democratico ). She was a member of the Italian Senate from 2013 to 2018 and Minister for Sport, Youth and Equality from April to June 2013 .

Life

Athletic career

Idem started her canoeing career at the age of eleven with the canoe club KV 45 Herringen in Hamm and took part in a European championship for the first time in 1977 when she was fourteen. At the final tournament in Plovdiv she won the gold medal over 200, 500 and 1000 meters and a bronze medal in a double kayak (K-2) with a Ravetta rosette . She took part in the European and World Canoe Championships several times . In total, she won 22 medals in world championship competitions, five of which were gold medals. She was the first Italian female athlete to win a gold medal in canoeing world championships. At the 2009 World Championships , she won the bronze medal in the K1-500m discipline, and at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London , she finished fifth in the final.

Results at Olympic Games

Josefa Idem started at eight Olympic Games and is one of the athletes with the most Olympic participations . In 1984 and 1988 she represented the Federal Republic of Germany , after which she started for Italy.

In the final of the 2008 Olympic Games, she was only beaten by four thousandths of a second.

Political career

For the Italian parliamentary elections in February 2013 , she was elected by the Partito Democratico in the Emilia-Romagna region to the first place on the list for the elections to the Senate . After a successful election, she has been a member of this parliamentary chamber since March 4, 2013. On April 28, 2013, she was appointed Minister for Sport, Youth and Equality in the Letta government. Irregularities in Idem's tax return for the years 2008 to 2011 led to sharp attacks in the press and by political opponents on her person at the end of June 2013, whereupon she decided to submit her resignation from the ministerial office. She was a member of the Senate until the end of the legislative period in March 2018. There she was a member of the Committee on Education and Culture.

Private

Josefa Idem grew up in Hamm and attended grammar school there from 1974 to 1980. Idem moved to Italy after the Olympic Games in 1988. There she trained with Guglielmo Guerrini, whom she married in 1990. She lives with her family near Ravenna and became an Italian citizen in 1992.
