Erika Mészáros

Erika Mészáros (born June 24, 1966 in Budapest ) is a former Hungarian canoeist . She won two Olympic medals and eleven world championship medals.

Career

Erika Mészáros won her first international medals at the 1986 World Championships in Montreal . Together with Katalin Povazsan , she won in a two- person kayak in front of the boats from the Soviet Union and Bulgaria. In a four- person kayak , the Hungarian boat with Erika Géczi , Erika Mészáros, Éva Rakusz and Rita Kőbán won ahead of the crews from the Soviet Union and Romania. Erika Mészáros also started in two boat classes at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul . In a two-person kayak, she and Éva Rakusz took fourth place behind the boats from the GDR, Bulgaria and the Netherlands. In the four-person kayak, the boat from the GDR won by one second over Erika Géczi, Erika Mészáros, Éva Rakusz and Rita Kőbán, bronze went to the Bulgarians.

At the 1989 World Championships in Plovdiv , the boat from the GDR with Anke Nothnagel and Heike Singer won in a two-man kayak over 500 meters, ahead of Éva Dónusz and Erika Mészáros. The canoeists from the GDR also won in a four-person kayak, with Katalin Gyulai , Rita Kőbán, Henriette Huber and Erika Mészáros receiving the silver medal. The following year, the team from the GDR competed for the last time at the 1990 World Championships . Éva Dónusz and Erika Mészáros won the silver medal both over 500 meters and over 5000 meters behind Ramona Portwich and Anke von Seck . At the 1992 Olympic Regatta in Barcelona , Erika Mészáros only competed in a four-man. Éva Dónusz, Kinga Czigány , Erika Mészáros and Rita Kőbán won with 0.15 seconds ahead of the German crew. For this success, the four-man was named Team of the Year by the Hungarian sports press . The following year, the last time the 5000 meter competitions were on the program at the 1993 World Championships . Over this distance, Éva Dónusz and Erika Mészáros won the silver medal behind Ramona Portwich and Anett Schuck . The Hungarian kayak four with Éva Dónusz, Kinga Czigány, Erika Mészáros and Rita Kőbán received the bronze medal over 500 meters behind the Germans and the Swedes. Mészáros had her last international appearance at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta , the Hungarian foursome with Szilvia Mednyánszky , Dónusz, Mészáros and Czigány took ninth place.

Erika Mészáros is the daughter of György Mészáros , who won two medals in canoe racing at the 1960 Olympic Games .
