Florence Rita Arrey

Florence Rita Arrey (born May 18, 1948 in Mamfé , French Cameroon ) is a Cameroonian lawyer and judge. Arrey was the first woman in Cameroon to hold the post of Chief Justice of the Court of Appeal. She was also a judge at the Constitutional Court of Cameroon and Vice-Chairperson of the International Criminal Court for Rwanda . Arrey has been a member of the Cameroon Constitutional Council since 2018.

Life

Florence Rita Arrey was born on May 18, 1948 in Mamfé in the southwest of what was then the French colony of Cameroon. After completing her school education at Queen of the Rosary College (QRC) Okoyong Mamfe and Cameroon College of Arts Science and Technology Bambili , Arrey studied law at the University of Lagos (Nigeria), then studied international law at the University of London . She also has a degree from ENAM Yaounde.

In 1974 Arrey became the first woman ever to be appointed as State Counsel , and work, among other things, as a Court of Appeal and at the High Court as a prosecutor or judge. In 1990 she was appointed Chief Justice of the Court of Appeal . Arrey has been a judge at the Constitutional Court of Cameroon since 2000.

In 2003, the UN General Assembly elected Arrey as ad litem judge for the International Criminal Court for Rwanda . In 2011 she was elected deputy presiding judge of the Criminal Court for Rwanda and as judge of the " International Residual Mechanism for Ad Hoc Criminal Courts ".

Since 2014 Arrey has been the head of the legal training department in the Cameroon Ministry of Justice. By decree of President Paul Biya , Arrey was appointed a member of the Cameroon Constitutional Council on February 7, 2018.

Arrey is Chair of the Cameroon Association of Women Judges and Vice Chair of the International Association of Women Judges .
