Uwe Madeja

Uwe Madeja (born February 6, 1959 in Berlin ) is a former German canoeist who competed for the GDR .

Madeja, who competed for the ASK Vorwärts Potsdam , won the 1977 Spartakiade in the single Canadian . In 1978 and 1979 he and Ronald Sägebarth, who still suffers from doping effects, took second place in the GDR championship in two-man Canadians over 500 meters. In 1978, Madeja achieved second place over 1000 meters behind Hans-Jürgen Tode in the Canadians, and in 1979 and 1980 he was defeated by Olaf Heukrodt over 500 meters . Madeja won his first GDR championship title in 1980 together with Heukrodt in a two-man over 1000 meters. At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow , the two also competed over 1000 meters and won the silver medal behind Romanians Ivan Patzaichin and Toma Simionov .

In 1981 Madeja and Heukrodt won the GDR championship title over 500 meters, at the World Championships in Nottingham the two competed over 1000 meters and again won silver behind Patzaichin and Simionov. In 1982 the two canoeists won the GDR title over 1000 meters, at the World Championships in Belgrade they received the bronze medal. After Madeja and Heukrodt had only finished third in the GDR championship over 1000 meters in 1983, Heukrodt changed partners and continued with Alexander Schuck . Madeja took second place on both individual routes in 1984. In 1985 he and Ulrich Papke won the GDR championship in two-man over 500 meters. At the world championship in Mechelen, the two finished third.

Uwe Madeja was married to the swimmer Silvia Rinka . The qualified sports teacher worked as an insurance salesman after reunification . In 1980 he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze.
