Ulrich Papke

Ulrich Papke (born March 4, 1962 in Neuruppin ) is a former German canoeist .

Ulrich Papke spent his childhood in Potsdam and attended the Heinrich von Kleist School , formerly POS 15, until he switched to the sports school Potsdam "Friedrich Ludwig Jahn" . His father was the theater and film actor Horst Papke , who for many years at Hans Otto Theater in Potsdam and died in 1990 at the age of 60.

Sports career

Ulrich Papke, who belonged to the ASK Vorwärts Potsdam , became world champion in the singles canoe in 1981 . Due to very strong competition in his own team, he switched to Ingo Spelly in the two-man Canadier . In 1986 both won bronze in two at the World Championships. Two years later they won the GDR championships in two, they were then third in the 1000 m, 1987 over 500 m, at the World Cup. Papke was not nominated for the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul . At the games four years later in Barcelona he formed a team again with Spelly. The duo won gold over 1000 m and silver over 500 m.

For winning a medal at the 1992 Olympic Games, he received the Silver Laurel Leaf on June 23, 1993.

In the same year they were awarded the Bambi for their achievements . In 1995 they were the last German champions over 1000 m and then ended their sports career.

In 1984 he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver in the GDR .
