ASK forward Potsdam

The Army Sports Club Forward Potsdam (ASK Potsdam) was an army sports club of the NVA based in Potsdam . It was founded on October 1, 1956 by spinning off the sections athletics , gymnastics , canoe racing , modern pentathlon and equestrian sports from the ASK Vorwärts Berlin . It developed into one of the most successful sports clubs in the GDR and served as one of the most important performance centers for athletics and canoe racing, which were important in the GDR.

ASK athletes have won more than 100 medals at the Olympic Games , World Championships and European Championships . The club's most famous athletes included the multiple Olympic canoe champions Birgit Fischer , Kay Bluhm , Jürgen Eschert and Torsten Gutsche as well as numerous athletes such as walker Peter Frenkel , runner Hans Grodotzki , pentathlete Klaus Petrikowski , swimmer Uwe Daßler , javelin thrower Uwe Mockery and the shot putter Udo Beyer but also the fencer Ingo Weißenborn .

The sports club area was at the airship port in Potsdam .

The ASG Vorwärts Potsdam existed parallel to the ASK until 1977 and operated a soccer section for the Potsdam location. The ASK Vorwärts was dissolved after reunification in 1990. The canoe department was transformed into the canoe club Potsdam in the OSC airship harbor and later into the canoe club Potsdam , which is still one of the most successful canoe clubs in the world.
