Kay Bluhm (born October 13, 1968 in Brandenburg (Havel) ) is a former German canoeist . He was multiple world champion and three-time Olympic champion in canoe racing .

Career

Bluhm came to canoe racing in 1978 after unsuccessful attempts as a footballer, handball player and basketball player. He trained at Motor-Süd Brandenburg, switched to ASK Potsdam in 1982 and to Müggelheim in 1983 . He later started for the KC Potsdam .

He achieved his first Olympic medal in Seoul in 1988, where he won a bronze medal in a kayak foursome for the East German Olympic team. Bluhm achieved his greatest Olympic successes at the Olympic Games in 1992 and 1996, where he and Torsten Gutsche won three gold and one silver medal in a two-person kayak .

For his achievements in the 1992 Olympics, he received the Silver Laurel Leaf on June 23, 1993.

In 1997, Bluhm ended his competitive sports career and devoted himself to his hobbies deep sea fishing and golf . He has been married to the canoe racing world champion Daniela Gleue since 1999 .

With his successes, which he mainly achieved with his kayak partner Torsten Gutsche , Bluhm is one of the most successful male canoeists of all time.
