Gunar Kirchbach (born October 12, 1971 in Bad Saarow-Pieskow , GDR ) is a former German canoeist .

The canoe racer of the KC Potsdam was in 1989, still starting for the GDR , together with Andreas Dittmer junior world champion in the two-man canoe over 500 meters and second over 1000 meters. In 1990 Kirchbach was a substitute for the last World Cup squad in the GDR, and in 1992 for the first all-German Olympic squad after reunification. In 1993 Kirchbach and Dittmer finished third at the world championship over 500 meters, in 1994 they won the title together over 1000 meters. In 1995 at the World Championships in Duisburg, the two received bronze medals over 500 meters as well as over 1000 meters. At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Dittmer and Kirchbach won the gold medal over 1000 meters in front of the boats from Romania and Hungary. The next day they finished fourth over 500 meters, 0.4 seconds behind the bronze medal. In 1997 Kirchbach joined Matthias Röder at the World Championships in Dartmouth, Canada , and they both won the 1000 meter title.

Gunar Kirchbach became a trainer at the federal base in Leipzig after his career.
