The Langenargen Capuchin Monastery was a monastery in Langenargen on Lake Constance , whose former convent is now used as a social station and kindergarten.

history

In 1694 the first Capuchins settled in Langenargen at the instigation of the House of Montfort . The monastery church of St. Antonius was built from 1696 to 1697, and was consecrated in 1699 by Konrad Ferdinand Geist von Wildegg , the auxiliary bishop of Constance . The monastery was finally completed in 1701. During the existence of the monastery, eleven to twelve priests and two to three lay brothers, as well as a scholastic , lived and worked there .

In 1811 the monastery was abolished by King Friedrich von Württemberg and the last remaining Capuchins were relocated to Wangen . In the course of this, the inventory was auctioned, including the high altar sheet of the Capuchin Church St. Antonius by JB Glückler (oil / canvas, 1698), with the oldest depiction of the Monfort district town of Tettnang .

After its sale, the monastery was torn down except for the convent and the surrounding walls. The convent was used as a brewery until 1871 and later as an inn.

Todays use

In 1915, under the leadership of Franciscan nuns , the building became the property of the Elisabethenverein, which ran a school for young children and women. In 1927 the rooms are rented by the Catholic elementary school. After the last Franciscan nuns had left in 1981 Langenargen, a successor to the Elisabeth association took over the house and runs the community center of St. Martin, and together with the Catholic parish St. Martinus and civil parish Langenargen Catholic Kindergarten "St. Elisabeth ".

The building is a historical monument.
