The 15th Canoe Racing World Championships took place from August 15 to 19, 1979 in Duisburg in the Federal Republic of Germany . The venue was the regatta track in the Duisburg Sports Park .

On five days of the competition, medals were awarded in 18 disciplines of canoe racing: single kayak (K1), two-person kayak (K2) and four-person kayak (K4) as well as single-canoe (C1) and two-person canoe (C2) for men , over 500, 1000 and 10,000 meters respectively. For women, it was over 500 meters in K1, K2 and K4.

With their seven titles, the Soviet Union team became the most successful nation in these world championships.
