The 35th Canoe Racing World Championships took place from August 17th to 20th, 2006 in the Hungarian city of Szeged . The World Championships were organized by the International Canoe Federation (ICF). After 1998, Szeged hosted the Canoe Racing World Championships for the second time .
A total of 27 competitions were held in the disciplines of canoeing and kayaking , with 18 for men and only 9 for women, since they only held kayak competitions. The distances of the regattas were 200 m, 500 m and 1000 m.
The venue was an artificial regatta course 2,400 m long and 122 m wide in the west of Szeged.
Highlights
The host country Hungary won 12 of the 27 gold medals. Germany and Russia each won 4 gold medals.
The Europeans were shocked by the victory of Mexican Everardo Cristóbal in the C-1-1000m final. This victory earned Mexico its first gold medal.
