Ákos Vereckei

Ákos Vereckei (born August 26, 1977 in Budapest ) is a former Hungarian canoeist . He won two gold medals in three Olympic competitions and received six gold medals at world championships.

Career

In July 1997 Vereckei won the title at the European Championships in Plovdiv with the Hungarian four- person kayak over 500 meters together with Botond Storcz , Robert Hegedüs and Zoltán Kammerer . A month later, Kammerer, Storcz, Vereckei and Hegedüs won the 1997 World Championships in Dartmouth, Canada on the 500-meter course. At the 1998 World Championships in Szeged, Ákos Vereckei won the title in a single kayak over 500 meters in front of a home crowd . In 1999 Vereckei competed at the European Championships in Zagreb together with Kammerer in a two-man kayak and won the silver medal in both the 500 and 1000 meters. He won the regatta over 1000 meters in a single kayak. At the World Championships in Milan , Vereckei successfully defended his title over 500 meters. The Hungarian four-man fought with Storcz, Kammerer, Vereckei and Gábor Horváth bronze over 500 meters and won the title over 1000 meters. In the following year Storcz, Kammerer, Vereckei and Horváth took second place over 1000 meters behind the German four at the European Championships in Poznan. Vereckei won the one over 500 meters. At the Olympic Games in Sydney Vereckei appeared twice. He finished fourth in the single kayak over 500 meters, the Hungarian four over 1000 meters won with Storcz, Kammerer, Vereckei and Horváth ahead of the German European champions.

In 2001 Vereckei won the gold medal in the single over 500 meters and the silver medal in the single over 1000 meters behind the German Lutz Liwowski at the European Championships in Milan . At the 2001 World Championships in Poznan, Vereckei won for the third time in a single kayak over 500 meters. In 2002, Vereckei won gold in the single over 500 meters for the third time at the European Championships in Szeged. At the World Championships in Seville , Ákos Vereckei and Krisztián Veréb took third place in the two-man kayak over 1000 meters. In 2003 at the World Championships in Gainesville the Slovak four-man won over 1000 meters, followed by Kammerer, Vereckei, Roland Kökény and Veréb the silver medal. In 2004, the Hungarian foursome over 1000 meters with Storcz, Vereckei, Horváth and Kammerer competed at the European Championships in Poznan and won the title. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens , the Hungarian four-man won in this line-up ahead of the German four-man, while Vereckei took fifth place over 500 meters.

At the 2006 World Championships in Szeged Ákos Vereckei, Roland Kökény, Lajos Gyökös and Gábor Horváth won the title in the foursome over 1000 meters. At the Olympic Games in Beijing , Vereckei finished sixth in the single over 500 meters, with the Hungarian four he came in fifth. Vereckei won his last international medals together with Zoltán Kammerer in a pair. They received the silver medal over 1000 meters at the European Championships 2010 in Trasona behind the German Martin Hollstein and Andreas Ihle. The two Hungarians also won silver behind Hollstein and Ihle at the 2010 World Championships in Poznan .
