Africalia is a Belgian non-profit organization ( Vzw / asbl ) for development cooperation with culturally oriented partners. The administrative headquarters are located on Rue du Congrès (Congresstraat) in Brussels . The organization has existed since the end of 2000. Africalia makes a contribution to intercultural communication between Africa and Europe ; To this end, she cooperates with artists primarily from contemporary disciplines. It receives support for this field of activity from the European Union and the Belgian State Secretariat Coopération Belge au Développement , which also initiated the establishment.

Positions

The program of Africalia assumes that creativity is an important basis for a changed African economy. Culture, art and creativity form a meaningful foundation for individuals and groups. Culture makes human and forms a basic right. Creativity and imagination enable self-determination and liberation from outside influences. Participation in culture is just as necessary for people as drinking water and stimulates global social and political change. Creativity is not a luxury, but an inexhaustible, clean and peaceful resource that enables permanent and decent jobs.

The important fields of activity of Africalia include: Audiovisual art , performing arts , literature and visual arts . Networks of artists should be placed in the perspective of economic innovation and social transformation in Africa. Belgian cultural workers are involved in the activities in order to draw attention to the creativity potential in Africa.

Forms of work

Africalia enables African organizations to provide technical and financial support on a partnership basis that promotes cultural cooperation.

The programs in Africa are designed to achieve four goals:

  • good and correct leadership of creative and cultural organizations,
  • Access to markets for African cultural and creative products and services through Africalia's partners,
  • Strengthening technical and artistic skills as well as management skills,
  • Strengthening the influence of culture in development policy.

Africalia sees the initiated cooperation activities as a commitment with lasting effects for its partners, not as financial support for specific cultural activities such as exhibitions, festivals or shows. The collaboration is based on expertise gathered over several years, taking into account the merits, strengths and weaknesses of the individual partners, as well as developing resources and expertise in order to achieve long-term goals with a sense of community.
