Zoltán Kammerer (born March 10, 1978 in Vác ) is a former Hungarian canoeist . He won three gold medals and one silver in five Olympic competitions.

Career

The years up to 2004

Kammerer began canoeing in 1987. At the Olympic Games in 1996 he competed in a single kayak over 1000 meters and was eliminated in the semifinals. In July 1997 he won the title at the European Championships in Plovdiv with the Hungarian four-man kayak both over 500 meters and over 1000 meters. Over 500 meters he was successful together with Botond Storcz , Ákos Vereckei and Robert Hegedüs . Zoltán Kammerer, Zsombor Borhi , Péter Almási and Robert Hegedüs won over 1000 meters . A month later, Kammerer, Storcz, Vereckei and Hegedüs won the 1997 World Championships in Dartmouth, Canada on the 500-meter course.

In 1999 Kammerer competed at the European Championships in Zagreb together with Vereczkei in a two-man kayak and won the silver medal in both the 500 and 1000 meters. At the World Championships in Milan the Hungarian four-man fought with Storcz, Kammerer, Vereckei and Gábor Horváth bronze over 500 meters and won the title over 1000 meters. In the following year Storcz, Kammerer, Vereckei and Horváth took second place over 1000 meters behind the German four at the European Championships in Poznan. At the Olympic Games in Sydney Kammerer competed twice. Together with Botond Storcz he won the gold medal over 500 meters in two, the Hungarian four over 1000 meters won with Storcz, Kammerer, Vereckei and Horváth ahead of the German European champions.

At the 2001 World Championships in Poznan, the German four-man won over 1000 meters ahead of the Hungarians with Kammerer, Storcz, Roland Kökény and Horváth. A year later, the Hungarian four-man finished fourth over 1000 meters at the World Championships in Seville . Kammerer and Storcz won the bronze medal in two over 500 meters. In 2003 at the World Championships in Gainesville the Slovak four-man won over 1000 meters, followed by Kammerer, Vereckei, Kökény and Krisztián Veréb the silver medal. In 2004, the Hungarian foursome over 1000 meters with Storcz, Vereckei, Horváth and Kammerer competed at the European Championships in Poznan and won the title. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens , the Hungarian four-man won in this line-up ahead of the German four-man, Storcz and Kammerer took fifth place over 500 meters.

The years from 2005

In 2005 Kammerer won bronze over 500 meters at the European Championships together with Gábor Kucsera . At the World Championships in Zagreb , the two took fourth place. In 2006 at the European Championships in Račice, Czech Republic, the Germans Tim Wieskötter and Ronald Rauhe won over 500 meters in front of Kucsera and Kammerer, while the two Hungarians won over 1000 meters in front of the German Rupert Wagner and Andreas Ihle . At the World Championships in Szeged , the two Hungarians received the bronze medal over 500 meters behind the Germans and behind the Canadian two. They won over 1000 meters ahead of Wagner and Ihle and thus won one of three gold medals for the Hungarian men, while the Hungarians won all nine gold medals in front of their home crowd.

In 2007, Kucsera and Kammerer won over 1000 meters at the European Championships in Pontevedra. At the World Championships in Duisburg, the two Hungarians won the bronze medal both over 1000 meters and over 500 meters. In 2008, Kucsera and Kammerer competed at the European Championships in Milan together with Zoltán Benkő and Viktor Kadler in a four-man team. The Hungarians took fourth place over 1000 meters and won silver over 500 meters behind the Slovaks. At the Olympic Games in Beijing , Kucsera and Kammerer started in two and took fourth place both over 500 meters and over 1000 meters.

In 2009, Kucsera and Kammerer won the silver medal over 500 meters behind the Belarusian boat with Wadsim Machneu and Raman Petruschenka at the European Championships in Brandenburg an der Havel, and the same finish occurred at the World Championships in Dartmouth . In the following year Kammerer and Ákos Vereckei won the silver medal over 1000 meters at the European Championships in Trasona behind the German Martin Hollstein and Andreas Ihle. The two Hungarians also won silver behind Hollstein and Ihle at the 2010 World Championships in Poznan . At the European Championships in Belgrade in 2011, Kammerer competed in the Hungarian foursome and finished fourth over 1000 meters. At the 2011 World Championships in front of a home crowd in Szeged, the Hungarian four-man only achieved seventh place over 1000 meters.

At the start of the 2012 season, the Hungarian foursome reached fifth place at the European Championships in Zagreb. At the 2012 Olympic Games in London , Kammerer competed with Tamás Kulifai , Dániel Pauman , Dávid Tóth in a foursome and won the silver medal behind the Australian foursome. In 2013, the Hungarians finished third in the same line-up at the European Championships in Montemor-o-Velho , and the Hungarians finished fourth at the World Championships in Duisburg . In 2014, the Hungarian four-man won bronze at the World Championships in Moscow . In 2015 in Milan Kammerer received another world championship silver in the foursome.

The 1.80 m tall Kammerer started his career for Ujpest Budapest , Győr Graboplast VSE and Szeged VSE . He lives in Göd with his partner and two children . He has been an honorary citizen of Göd since 2003 and an honorary citizen of Győr since 2004 .
